Kirriemuir and Fetteresso

Post by Birdlip » Mon May 14, 2007 2:34 am

Wondering if some kind person can help with any information on Agnes Thompson b abt 1775, Kirriemuir and/ or William Irvine b abt 1775 at Fetteresso, Kincardinshire. This information is from IGI, and I havent been able to confirm it

I havent been able to find a marriage either. All their known children were born in Northumberland. Agnes was still alive in 1841 census, but her place of birth is just "Scotland". However my grandma b 1883 always spoke of their being some family connection with J.M.Barrie, so when I found the Kirriemuir entry, it made sense.

Subsequent generations adhered to the naming pattern religiously, so Ill list the children in order. Hopefully that may help to identify possible parents or siblings of William and Agnes, pity there are no really unusual names!

Mary Agnes b 1801, William b 1802, John, 1804, George 1807, Eleanor 1810, Charles 1812, Robert abt 1814, Elizabeth abt 1816, Emily abt 1818, James abt 1824.

I'm really stuck on this, crossing my fingers! regards, Birdlip

Any sign of Agnes in the 1851, just incase the birthplace is mentioned?

Best wishes

Hi Lesley,

how nice to get such a friendly response.

In fact, Agnes is still alive in 1851, not in 1861 though, but I'm afraid her birth place is "Scotland" again.

regards, Birdlip

Oh, bother! That is a bit of a disappointment....
I suppose there is no chance she was obliging enough to come back to Scotland to die after 1854?!

Can you give us some details of the Kirriemuir birth you found on IGI for Agnes - I'm not seeing it but then, I've not had my coffee yet..!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

I'm not suprised you couldnt find Agnes on IGI. She isnt listed separately, just in Williams details. If you type in William Irvine birth 1775, he is listed in the Pedigree Resource File. Unfortunately, I think Pedigree Resource File entries are often quite unreliable, which is why I want to confirm all this. Click on Wms name and Agnes Thompson appears, click on her name and the Kirriemuir place of birth comes up.

The "abt 1775" for Agnes is mine, though if her age (73) given at the 1851 census is correct, (and it may be a big if) its more accurately abt 1778.

Freebmd has a death entry for an Agnes Irvine in Castle Ward for March quarter 1859. I'm pretty confident this would be her, she would have been abt 81, based on the 1851 age given. I havent got around to purchasing it yet, death certificates seem to give very little information thats really useful, certainly not place of birth, for example. Though it would give her age of course, so perhaps that would help. What do you think? Any other ideas??
