Looking for R S WORKMAN, Artist

Post by q98 » Tue May 15, 2007 11:05 am

My great-uncle James McCREADIE married Jessie Baird WORKMAN at Saltcoats, Ayrshire on 11 July 1923. Jessie’s parents, Robert Spier WORKMAN and Margaret Baird (ms CAMPBELL) WORKMAN, were married on 9 September 1881 also at Saltcoats.

I have an image titled “Old Saltcoats Harbour” with the artist’s name of R S WORKMAN. I believe the scene as painted to be older than Jessie’s father Robert. However, I wonder if there was a connection?

Regards and thanks.

I know it probably doesn't answer your question, but that artist has two paintings featured...

Hi Jim,

I thought it might be. I can't help wondering if, as those two works were worthy of inclusion on that site, maybe there is more information about him out there somewhere.

Hopefully someone will be along soon who can point you to sites dedicated to Scottish artists.

Good Luck.

No sight of him (or her?) on the web other than those sites above.

See http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/online/info_artists.htm for a listing or reference works, one of which, surely, will have some details on him (or her?).

David

Folks, thanks for those suggestions. It really grinds me when I locate items like this and I can't rest until I find out!

Thanks again.

Hi Jim

Since the name is part of local history try
http://www.threetowners.com/

I didn't have time to look at all the entries on the site but even if there is no direct info I'm sure by getting in touch with them they will be able to give you detail which is specifically local rather than the general info that arty sites often give.

It might be worth contacting North Ayrshire Museum at North Ayrshire Council. I'd be surprised if they don't have more information on the artist.

I found another one of his one the site...

Looking for R S WORKMAN, Artist - LOCATED

Post by q98 » Wed May 16, 2007 9:53 am

Thanks to all for comments, suggestions, etc.
North Ayrshire Museum advise they are holding an exhibition next year, part of which will feature artwork by R S Workman.

For those wondering if there was a connection, YES he was my great-uncle's father-in-law!

I now need to locate the final resting place of John McCreadie who died 2 August 1879 onboard Ayr No. 2 Tugboat. I have checked with North AND South Ayrshire but neither have any record of his burial in either Ayr or Ballantrae. Look out for another enquiry.

Thanks again folks and best wishes.
