What is Breadalbane Hall?

Post by Brenda » Thu May 17, 2007 3:35 am

Hi Everyone

I was going through the various documents I have and noted that a few of the marriages were conducted at Breadalbane Hall, Glasgow

Is this the Registry Office :?:

Thanks

Brenda

Hi Brenda
I don't know Glasgow very well, but a search on the web suggested that it was Breadalbane Hall at 11 Oxford Street, Gorbals. There are some pictures of Oxford Street on the Virtual Mitchell site, but not no. 11... :roll:

I suspect is was probably more like a hall where a function could be held. I'm guessing this marriage took place in about the late 1800s or early 1900s? At this time in my tree many marriages seem to have taken place in hotels and other places where it would be possible to hold a function, such as a marriage celebration.

Registry offices did not come in until later:
By the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1939, which came into operation on 1 July 1940, civil marriages were introduced...

Hi Brenda, Lesley, Maggie,
Re Breadalbane Hall.
Maggie, could the Scran pic of Breadalbane Free Church be the one in Perthshire?

There is a wee mention on this site of another in Glasgow;
http://www.highlandcathedral.org/index. ... lds&page=4

And a pic at;
http://www.theglasgowstory.com/image.php?inum=TGSD00533

I passed by Breadalbane St. yesterday and it's all but gone.
Just two closes left; at the eastern corner with St. Vincent St., and one is a newish tenement.
Which is approximately on the ground where the church originally stood.

Brenda, what is the GROS number & Registration District name on the MC?
This would narrow down the area in which Breadalbane Hall was located.
Lesley has found a hall of the name at 11 Oxford St, Gorbals.
Does this agree with the MC details?
Jack
