Hi,
Have spent years trying to find info re Helen/Ellen Frew née Main(e) c 1830
Found her on the census from 1851, married but mother Mary living with her. She is posited as being born in Newton, Ayrshire but can not find her on the LDS or SP. or on the 1841 census.
I have finally found her death cert, maiden name spelt wrongly and in a different county to the one I expected but there you go.
Father Robert Maine
Mother Mary Tweedulty!!
Needless to say that name appears nowhere.
There is a marriage of Robert Maine to a Mary Twigly in St. Quivox and Newton, Ayrshire but no Helen Main to Robert and Mary on the 1841..
On the 1851 it says that Mary (Twigly) was born in Ireland. There are a few Twigley's on the 1841 born in Ireland so that might be closer.
Would you accept these as the correct parents. ie Robert and Mary Twigly.
And is there anywhere else that I might find her birth?
Many thanks
Jeanie
Ps thought I had posted this all ready but can't find it so if I have, sorry.

Hi,
Of the top of my head the first thing I would maybe look at is the other children if there are any. If these exist then it may be worth sourcing their marriage and/or death records to see if you can match up the surnames that way.
It's possible the informant didn't know the exact maiden name of Ellen's mother or it could have been incorrectly translated to paper.

Hi Rab,
Thanks for your thoughts. I have not managed to find any other children, the name Main is quite common but I'm off for another look.
If only I could find her on the 1841 I might find some siblings but I have tried a hundred different combinations and not come close.
Will keep looking
Thanks again
Jeanie

Hi Annette,
Funnily enough I have come across Quigley. There is a death of Mary Main other name Quigley in Edinburgh where I would not expect her to be.. This of course could be her husbands name though there is no marriage to a Robert Maine and Quigley.
Have finished my last batch of credits and the next time I put in more money will have a look at that entry.

Oh thank you Jean. I have been marching through my credits recently.
It would appear that Helen was a very popular name at that time.
Maybe they were visiting Ireland in 1841.
The search goes on but am running out of options.
Thanks again
Jeanie
