Just wondering if anyone can tell me is the name Magnus is a name for something else like James or is it an actual name?
Its just that I am tracing my girlfriends tree and there was a Magnus Gatt in the Merchant Navy during WW2 and I would like to know if that was the name he used.
Thanks
Magnus

As far as I am aware it is a Scandinavian name which came to Scotland via Orkneys/Shetlands? It has variants one of which is Manus.
I would think it is Latin in origin Magnus meaning Great/magnificent?(too many years since my Latin Lessons!)
