James Yeman but which one?
I have found my ancestor James Yeaman in North Shields and discovered he came from Scotland. After searching census and BDM indexes in Scotland I have found several James Yeamans one of which appears to be the correct one. How can I be sure he is? He does have some of the same family members but I have been on one wild goose chase already. Anyone have any tips for me so I can be assured he is 'my' James?

Welcome to TalkingScot, Chris.
We are all interested in finding that 'magic' alarm that sounds, whenever we stray off in the wrong direction, using up time and £.
Have you tried looking on the International Genealogical Index http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... search.asp? Some of the family trees and related information there, may help you to eliminate or confirm some of the 'likely' candidates you have.
As you mention, some of the same names are used again and again within in a family, and identifying some likely connections based on those patterns, may help. SCOTTISH NAMING PATTERNS EXPLAINED

Hope this helps a bit Chris, but others will be along to add more suggestions.

Thanks Frances for such a quick reply! I have searched the 'family search' site and that is the one I went down the wrong path. I will look with interest at the other site you recommend. Its very frustrating this genealogy lark

This might be of interest.
When I was researching Dundee fishing folk I came across Yeaman Shore by the harbour.
I subscribe to Scran, an image service. On it you can see various old pictures of Yeaman Shore. There could have been a link, sea trade or fishing between North Shields and Dundee. Tucked in between the photos are images of articles. There is one page entitled the Yeaman Family Tree.
There is also a Yeaman Place in Edinburgh at the end of the Union Canal I think.
Important folk getting places named after them?
