I agree with Russel about adding names to your sig.
However, when names are added along with counties, towns or villages how does one know if that specific info refers to either a birth, marriage or death at that particular location.
Would it be possible to standardize the sigs some way, without complicating things, in order to see at a glance if it connects with one's own tree. But restricting it to one BDM only.
I'm sure this would be a huge benefit to all concerned....and speedy.
Currently, it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
And aren't we all used to that.

Hi John
I agree that a specific name and associated dates , whether Birth, Death or Marriage could prove useful but might limit things a little.
I have made good contacts just with the family name and found links somewhere along the line even if I hadn't reached that generation in my own searches. We are now far enough back in almost all direct family lines that we have most of the direct genealogical links but it is good to find out about some of the colateral lines.
On TS when I see a name in someone else's signature it alerts me to look for that name when I'm hunting down other family links. Recently while looking through some Edinburgh deaths pre-1850 I noticed an unusual name in unusual circumstances ( he and [his son] was part of the garrison in Edinburgh Castle. I gave the original poster the information because the name was so unusual it had to tie in somehow.
My main gripe is when people don't say where in the world they are. That snippet of information makes such a difference to the type of help and guidance you can give. No point recommending a trip to Park Circus when they live in NZ

Thanks for your comments Russel, but I never mentioned dates.
I just often wonder, when viewing surnames in sigs, whether that individual was born there, lived there or died there. There is a difference.
Perhaps, because of my age, I'm trying to short-circuit things and obtain as much info for my tree as I can before I kick the bucket.
Cheers

Hi John
I think quite a few of us are in that sensitive stage of life where time matters and you wonder how much of it you have left
I think part of the problem with signatures is the limitation on the number of characters you can include. Just an aspect of the way the programme is set up I suppose.
A suggestion would be to work on only one or two names at a time and change your signature entry every time you start on a new branch. That way it would catch other folks attention as well as reminding you about where your concentration is being applied.

Hi Russell
There are always two sides to a story or different ways of viewing things.
Stating, formerly Kilmarnock, does not indicate that I have resided for years in the following locations:-
Maldive Islands, London, Welkom, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Zululand, Mt Newman, Port Hedland, Perth, Sydney, Nhulunbuy, Franfurt am Main, Melbourne and Lismore. Including National Service.
Heaven help the poor soul who someday tries to trace my genealogical self.
Maybe this indicates everything else is a piece of cake.
Regards
