Hi sandwellsaddler
and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
I'm guessing here that you have arrived at John Sutherland and Margaret Mckenzie from tracing back through Robert? Can you tell us where you found the birth info for Robert? You have reached a time at which many people find their family tree research slows down or in some cases grind to a bit of a halt.
Have you tried to find any other children to this couple? Sometimes the birth places of chilren can give you some idea of the movements (or not!) of the family, if you have Robert's death entry (not sure if you do?) if he survived past 1855 in Scotland then that may give you an occupation for John, or the OPR births of the children ,if you are lucky, may do that too.
Worth checking on this web site too, to see if there is any mention of any monumental inscription;
http://www.graven-images.org.uk/index.htm
Another area of research may be to read the Kirk Session minutes for the area, whcih you can do at NAS, but I'm not sure if you are in based Scotland or not, so that may not be a possibility.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi sandwellsaddler
On the IGI there seem to be two entires, possibly for the same person, both submissions, neither of which mention the mother (as happens in some OPRs) :
ROBERT SUTHERLAND
Male
Christening: 11 JUN 1793 Latheron, Caithness, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JOHN SUTHERLAND
and the other:
ROBERT SUTHERLAND
Male
Birth:
Christening: 02 MAR 1793 Latheron, Caithness, Scotland
Parents:
Father: JOHN SUTHERLAND
The marriage is also a submission:
JOHN SUTHERLAND
Marriages:
Spouse: MARGARET MC KENZIE Family
Marriage: 05 FEB 1778 Latheron, Caithness, Scotland
Submissions are entries which have been added from other people's research - sometimes they are accurate, sometimes not. I'd be tempted to check out the original OPR on these ones. You can order films from your local LDS if you are not able to visit anywhere is Scotland which may have the films.
He is not showing up on Scotlands People; I can't find a Robert Sutherland born in Caithness in 1792-1794 on there, which is odd, or the marriage in Caithness in 1778, but the dates on IGI must have come from somewhere (perhaps the family were not established Church of Scotland so are not in the OPRs).... your mission is to find out where!!
A tenant in that context is usually someone who was farming land - someone who rented land from a "superior". It could be someone who farmed a large area covering many acres, or it could be someone living on smallholdings farming a small amount of land.
Best wishes

p.s. who was the death informant for Robert in 1866?

Hi sandwellsaddler
But it is always wise to be reasonably open minded about ages given by informants at the time of death - sometimes they are accurate, sometimes not. Son George may well be spot-on, but you might need some cross reference on that one to prove it to your satisfaction. Have you seen Robert in any of the census records: 1841-1861 inclusive? These may give additional clues if you have not already seen them.
Best wishes

The problem with death entries is that the deceased person was not in a position to give the information themselves... a son is probably quite a good informant. Certainly much better than a friend or neighbour who may only have had a thin grasp on age or parentage, if at all.his death certificate says the informant was his son george
