Hi Kate
As you have mentioned already, the following children can be found on IGI (all extracts) and the same children can be found on SP:
CHIRSTAN SMAILL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 16 JUL 1769 Ettrick, Selkirk, Scotland
(bit of a gap here for these times - maybe more children elsewhere or perhaps one was lost)
AGNESS SMEAL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 MAR 1775 Peebles, Peebles, Scotland
MAY SMEAL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 08 APR 1779 Heriot By Crookston, Midlothian, Scotland
DAVID SMEAL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 JAN 1783 Heriot By Crookston, Midlothian, Scotland
BETTY SMEAL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 18 MAY 1786 Heriot By Crookston, Midlothian, Scotland
MARGARET SMEAL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 23 JAN 1792 Heriot By Crookston, Midlothian, Scotland
Have you looked at the OPR entries for each of the children? Sometimes these can contain little bits of information which help add to the picture, like an occupation, a place of abode, that sort of thing. They appear to have moved from Ettrick > Peebles > Heriot.
I would agree that the marriage appears to be "hiding" for the moment, certainly no obvious sign on IGI and SP. Few options on that one - maybe they married in a parish for which the records have not survived, maybe there is gap in the relevant OPR, maybe they are hiding under a devious mistranscription, maybe they were not Church of Scotland but a dissenting church - I recently saw a page of OPR "births" headed "Children of Dissenters"! so it would be possible for the children still to be mentioned perhaps without any obvious sign of an OPR marriage in some parishes....
Did any of the children survive until after 1855? If so, I'd be tempted to check the deaths of those I could find just to see if any further info comes to light on the parents, like a variation in a name, variations in occupation etc..
Sorry, I've nothing new to add to what you have already found...
Best wishes
Lesley
