Tracing John Waddell

My great grandfather John Waddell came to Australia c. 1861 but from other sources this means he was only about 10 or 11 years old. His death certificate gives his parents as Archibald Waddell and Margaret Moncrief and that he was born in Edinburgh, Lothian. John's mother Margaret died after John (1894) and her bequest to him was then passed to his youngest son Alfred. I have no idea how to follow up on any of this. Any help appreciated

A couple of questions to help us here:
You mention other sources for John's age - can you tell us what other sources you have for him, please?
Do you know if Margaret Moncrief died in Scotland?

My heart skipped a beat as John Waddell is also my Great-Grandfather's name.Alas he was born in Dollar(1857)his father Alexander.There are connections to Edinburgh-the three middle children moved there to be near an Uncle after their parents died 1861/1867.My John decided to be a boy soldier but was back with his brothers in 1871 in Edinburgh.
Alexander as far as I know was born in Scone(Scoonie)Perth& his parents probably Alexander Waddell &Margaret McLeod.
However whether it was a Waddell Uncle or a Graham(their mother Ann Graham)Uncle i don't know & they were enumerated in their workplace.!
