Hi Natasha
Have you any details from his death, such as parent's names? Maybe, if you don't already have it, his marriage to Jane Wilson could contain some further information too. Do you know when they married? Do have names for their children? (There are often clues in the children's names too.)
Best wishes

Hi Natasha
Before you waste too much money on scotlandspeople, can I warn you that the name McGillivray has more variations than I ever thought possible.
My wife and I searched for months for her elusive relatives and managed ultimately by searching using a wildcard set of M*cGil*v*r*.
Sometimes it is written as Mc at other times Mac.
Possible variants are Gilvra, Gilvray, Gilveray, Gilverey, Gillvra, Gillvray, Gillveray, Gillverey, Gilliveray, Gilliverey, Gillivray, Gillivaray.
McGilvra was the common spelling on Colonsay.
McGilliveray was more common on the mainland.
The harder the search sometimes, the more satisfaction once you have tracked them down.

hi guys,
thank you so much for the tips, who would of thought that there were so many ways to spell one name!!!!!!!!!! a few people are researching him and i have him being born glasgow, strathclyde, found him (or it fits in with his birth year) on shipping indexes as coming to australia in 1862 on "heather bell", have 12 children listed for him and jane, they were married in 1865 in tasmania, they had a lot of their children in the oatlands area so i wonder if this is why he is listed on igi as being born oatlands? one of his daughters was mary jane who is my mother in laws grandmother have looked on one of the opr's but there were a couple born around the same time and i have no idea how to figure out which one is the right one

Hi natasha
The IGI record is a record submitted by a member of the LDS church & is no doubt wishful thinking (someone who didn't have a clue
). The AVRI (Australian Vital Records Index - church & civil records) does not have his birth in Tasmania. If he followed the Scottish naming patterns when naming his children his mother would be Mary (or Mary Jane) and his father Malcolm (2nd daughter and 1st son)

I should have mentioned - given that they had so many daughters - the third daughter should have been named after the mother and she wasn't, so perhaps Jane was not Scottish & thus not interested in the naming rules. You may find, however that many of the girls may be named after siblings (of either parent) - or partners of siblings - e.g. Rachel Buist could be after a sister of either of the couple who married a Mr Buist. If you have some possible births in Scotland, check for siblings as well, for some of these names.

There are not many Malcolms born c1840 in Scotland on the BVRI but there is this possibility.

As you see they are all from Killarrow, Argyllshire.
Perhaps a hint could be in the 1841/1851 censuses, but as Russell said there may be quite a few of them. All the best with your searching.
This is something I have recently noticed in searching for my lang deid yins, it threw me for a while until I realised what was happening.trish1 wrote:I should have mentioned...
