Hi, I am new to your wonderful site.
I am trying to trace relatives who may have been in WW1.
My GG Grandfather was Thomas Watson (died before 1881) who married Jeannie Boyd.
My Great Grandfather William Boyd Watson (born about 1858 Irvine, Scotland)), emmigrated to Australia about 1884-5 with his wife Annie Montgomery (born about 1857 Dunbarton Scotland). I am trying to trace the decendants of William's siblings Thomas Watson , Jeanie Watson, Sarh Watson, and Agnes Waston.
Also, I would like to trace Annie's siblings as well. Annie's father was James Montgomery born 26.07.1834 m. Isabell McLean b. c. 1832.
The reason being that I am going to Somme, Ypres and Gallipoli in August and would like to pay my respects to any ancestors while I am there as well as trying to piece together the descendants that are not on our family tree from the Scottish side yet.
Hope these names ring a bell with someone.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers
Kim

Hi Ozzie,
A warm welcome to Talking Scot
The Scotlands People site wil be the most helpful. When I am seeking siblings and their descendants I tend to "start at the end" and look for their death certificates. Our Scottish ones are a mine of information, usually giving parents names and spouse's name. With the spouse's name you can usually find a marriage certificate. Occupations can be really helpful as they can help to identify people on the censuses, where you might also find the names of any children. The name and relationship of the informant on a DC can be a real treasure, and names of witnesses on marriage certificates can sometimes help you to find out who daughters married.

You'll find Scotlands People on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
You are going to love it! As far as most of us here on TS are concerned it is the best site for Scottish family research.
It is a pay to view site but, for me, it is very good value. Apart from the 1881 census, which is a transcription, everything else can be viewed and downloaded as original document images. If you pop in to the Gallery (link at the top of this page) and have a look at some that have been uploaded you'll see what a treat you are in for.
Any help you need searching, just ask us. We'll do our best to help.

When searching for William Boyd WATSON's marriage, consider the spelling MONTGOMERIE for his bride !
For Annie's siblings, the quickest way to identify them is the LDS site at
http://www.familysearch.org/ which produces ...........
Scotland, British Isles
Father: James Montgomery, Mother: Isabella Mclean
ANN MONTGOMERY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 22 OCT 1856 Kilwinning, Ayr, Scotland

This looks like William in the 1881 census ..........

His siblings are a wee bit more difficult, as he got his father,s name wrong on his marriage register entry.
The correct family, again from http://www.familysearch.org/ is .............

Father: Thomas Watson, Mother: Jane Boyd
JOHN WATSON - International Genealogical Index

Hi Kim,
The online IGI shows the following list of children to Thomas Watson and Jean Boyd. Their birth certificates should all be available to download from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . The one with the most information on it should be the 1855 one - a bonus year in Scottish genealogy. (Here's hoping they registered him before the end of that year.)
JOHN WATSON - Birth: 18 DEC 1855 Irvine, Ayrshire
THOMAS WATSON - Birth: 01 NOV 1859 Irvine, Ayrshire
MARY WATSON - Birth: 09 JUN 1861 Irvine, Ayrshire
THOMAS WATSON - Birth: 02 MAR 1863 Irvine, Ayrshire
ELIZABETH WATSON - Birth: 07 MAY 1865 Irvine, Ayrshire
JANE WATSON - Birth: 13 APR 1867 Irvine, Ayrshire
SARAH WATSON - Birth: 08 DEC 1868 Irvine, Ayrshire
AGNES WATSON - Birth: 15 NOV 1870 Irvine, Ayrshire
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks David and Andrew. I forgot to mention the Family Search site.
Kim,
If you search on there first, it can pin people down a bit more so that you have a better chance of having accurate dates and details before searching on SP for the actual certificate. Best of all - it's FREE

Hi Ozzie
If you decide to go for the Birth Extracts at ScotlandsPeople, the first one you should obtain is that of John, born 1855 at Irvine. As 1855 was the first year of compulsory registration, generally speaking, Extracts of that year contain more family information than those of later years. I have an 1855 Birth Extract which shows the parents names, ages, dates and places of birth, year and place of marriage and number of children, alive and deceased.
http://www.monaghan95.freeserve.co.uk/headpics.htm can prove useful in searching for Ayrshire relatives as it contains headstone photographs which you can request from the web owner. Using the forenames of William's siblings, I located the following WATSONs:
WATSON, Thomas & Isabella JAFFREY
WATSON, Thomas F
WATSON, John & Jane Reid WATSON
Good hunting.
