GALLACTIES

Post by coffeyc1 » Sun Jun 17, 2007 10:44 am

Gallacties is an unusual surname as I never come across anyone else researching it or have been unable to find it on any websites, search tools etc. I am researching my partner's great grandparents and unfortunately due to problems do not know where I obtained the following information:

His great grandmother was Mary Anne McCoy born 1879 in Govan. Her parents name are Francis McCoy and Lizzie Gallacties. It is believed they originated from Ireland.

Please has anyone come across the name Gallacties?

Many thanks
Christine

Hi Christine

There have been lots of variations in the spelling of names over the years and this could have been either a mis-hearing by a Scots Registrar of an Irish speaker or a mis-transcription from a hand-written record.

My best guess at the original would be Gellatly or Gellatlie.
I would search, where it is possible to use wildcards, for G?l*t*l*
I can't think of any other names that combination of letters and wildcards would bring up.

GALLACTIES possibly GALLACHER

Post by coffeyc1 » Sun Jun 17, 2007 7:00 pm

Hi Russell

Many thanks for your response. I am wonder if the name is actually Lizzie Gallacher and it has been recorded incorrectly during 'translation' from the original record. So I am going to try to find out if there is a marriage recorded in either Scotland or Ireland between Lizzie Gallacher and Francis McCoy in the 1800s.

Kind regards and thank you for your assistance
Christine
