McCreadie / Gibbon Families

Post by Brenda » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:15 am

Looking for any info on MARGARET McCREADIE & LAWRENCE GIBBON

Margaret's parents were Thomas McCreadie & Jean Forgie.

Laurie's / Lawrence's parents were Lawrence Gibbons? & Elizabeth McKinnon .

I have the death record for Margaret Gibbon, M/S McCREADIE She died @ Caldwall ? Ayr, Jan 25th 1876, age 52.

Married to Lawrence Gibbon, March 3rd 1850 Colmonell, their marriage certificate shows his name as LAURIE McGRIBBON

Thier daughter, Elizabeth Gibben, B 1853, married John McCracken 1874 Glasgow.

Lawrence died 22-06-1900 age 70 @ Kilmarnock, widower of Margaret McCreadie & Jane McClymont?? [hard to read ]

Any help will be most appreciated

Hi Brenda

Here's a start.......

There are two births that pop up on the IGI when you run a family search. The 1853 birth of Elizabeth.....and an 1855 birth of Agnes :D

The 1855 BC will indicate how many children they have had and where Lawrence and Margaret were born.

I'm making an extreme guess here based only on the match of parents names that this might be Lawrence/Laurie in 1841......

Name: Lawrence Gribbein
Age: 16
Estimated birth year: abt 1825
Gender: Male
Where born: Wigtownshire, Scotland

Civil parish: Inch
County: Wigtownshire
Address: Innermessan
Occupation: Agr Lab
Parish Number: 886
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Elisabeth Gribbein 52
Elisabeth Gribbein 9
Lawrence Gribbein 55
Lawrence Gribbein 16
Peter Gribbein 12

If this is the right family.....Lawrence Sr. and Elisabeth Sr. both state born in Ireland while the other 3 household members are born Wigtownshire. This does not match the place of birth for Lawrence on later records so be warned......this may be a red herring record!

Best wishes
Jean

ps....almost forgot  .....the BIVRI gives up one more child to them....a son...

GRIBBIN, John Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 18 May 1850
Christening Date: 5 Jun 1850 Recorded in: Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland
Father: Laurence GRIBBIN
Mother: Margaret MCCREADIE
Source: FHL Film 1041380 Dates: 1819 - 1855

And so in 1851.......this lady is Lawrence's mum.....the 1841 record above is looking much less likely isn't it?....hmmmmm

Name: Elizabeth Gribbon
Age: 64
Estimated birth year: abt 1787
Relationship: Mother-in-law
Gender: Female
Where born: Cantyne, Argyle
Parish Number: 594
Civil parish: Girvan
Town: Girvan
County: Ayrshire
Address: Doune Park
Occupation: Seamtress (formerly)
ED: 12
Household Members: Name Age
Elizabeth Gribbon 64
John Gribbon 10 Mo
Margaret Gribbon 30

Best wishes

Hello Jean

Thanks you for replying to my query.
The birth for John sounds promising , I checked out the 1855 birth for Agnes..wrong parents.

IGI shows a Thomas McCreadie & Jean Forgie marriage abt 1800 Ballantrae., but I've had no luck in finding a birth record for Margaret.
I'll try to find a birth for John Gribbin? at SP. I've wasted so many credits with all the name variations on Gibbon / Gribbons etc.etc. :x

Thanks again
Brenda

Hi Brenda

Whoa...hold your horses a minute!! Don't waste another credit!! You stated that you looked at the 1855 Agnes and it was the wrong parents? Hmmmm......we've got to figure out why you think this is so? Tell me what name did you search on? In which parish? Did you use wildcards to find the name?

You see...............If you use the IGI as a free finding tool first and if there is any entry listed in it that is sourced to an extracted record from an OPR filming or in this case an 1855 statutory record filming.....and you use the spelling found in the IGI...and the place of birth found in the IGI.....then the corresponding digital image will be found on SP...and usually only cost 6 credits to locate!

In your case I searched for AGNES GRIB*N b. 1855 in the county of AYR and parish of GIRVAN.

How do you think I knew they had a son anyway?? It was the 1855 record that told me to look for it!!!

Don't forget now......use wildcards for your name searching......*GRIB*N will return all the variations including a Mc or Mac added on the front end!!!!

I hope this helps some...

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

I found a birth record for Agnes on SP when I downloaded it the parents names were incorrect. But eventually found the right one.Shows that Agnes was the 3rd child for Margaret & Lawrence.

I'm not having too much luck on SP today, found a birth record for Janet McCredy in the OPR , paid my credits and when it dowloaded there was no reference to her on it??

Still banging my head

Thanks again Jean

Hi Brenda,

If the index says that she is on that page, and you find she is not, you should submit a contact form to ScotlandsPeople telling them the details. They should refund you any credits lost if they agree that it is an indexing error. It also gives them the opportunity to correct the error in their database.

All the best,

AndrewP
