Jame McCraw and Janet Morris

Post by John Bird » Wed Jun 27, 2007 3:41 am

Hi
I am trying to find the date of birth of James McCraw born in Edinburgh circa 1822. He was the son of Peter McCraw. He married Janet Morris about 1847 in Kirkcaldy Fife. I would like to confirm the marriage date. Janet was the daughter of Alexander Morris and Janet Cromby (Crombie).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Hi John
Can you tell us where you found the information you have so far, please?
Did James survive until after 1855? Have you his death entry? Did you find Janet's parents' names on her death entry? Have you seen the couple in any census?
Just trying to get an idea of what you already know so we can work from there.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley

James and his family emigrated to Australia in 1852. He died on 3 July 1858 at Prahran a suburb of Melbourne Victoria. His death certificate stated he was 37 years old and born in Edinburgh. His death certificate also said he was 26 years old when he married in Kirkcaldy ie about 1847. At the time of his death he had 4 children -Peter aged 10 (born/chr 2/10/1848 at Kirkcaldy), Alexander 7 (born 23/6/1850 at Kirkcaldy), William 4 and Francis 2. The latter 2 were born in Prahran. James death certificate confirmed his wife as Janet Morris. I found a Janet born/chr in Kirkcaldy on 22/8/1820. I have not located her death certifiacte but she died after 1892.

I hope this helps and I appreciate your assistance.

regards

John

Hi John & Maureen
Only problem with the above marriage on IGI is that it is a submission. I can't see a similar record, seaching on James M*craw on SP. So then we need to wonder where the submitter got the place and date from. It could well be that James was not a member of the Established Church of Scotland, so would not appear in the OPR, but has maybe been seen in the register of another Church such as a Catholic, Baptist, Quaker, Methodist, Free Church or any other Church which was not CoS. Any clues in your records, James, that suggest which church they belonged to?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi John,
There is a James McCraw who married a Jane Morris on 15 November 1847 in Kirkcaldy on Scotland's People. Janet/Jane/Jean are often interchangeable. I have not looked at the record, just fiddled with the search function, but assume these are your people!
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
That seems a likely couple! Well done. Certainly worth checking them out. ....And forget all my meaderings above about different churches!
The IGI submitter seems to have the day and month but maybe a typo on the year has occurred there?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi John

I noticed you said you hadn't found a death for Jane/Janet, so I had a browse of my records. I find a possible remarriage for Jane McCraw with William Murphy in 1868 & the most likely death seemed to be for a Jane Murphy in 1892 (aged 71 - parents unknown). If you don't have the details & would like same do let me know.
