Can anyone help me find a family in 1871, Please?
Orlando Glenn Dewar born 1824, wife Winifred born c1830, son Orlando born 1853, daughter Winifred born 1859 were living in Devon/Cornwall but disappear after the 1861 census. Orlando senior's father came from Stirlingshire so I wondered whether the family might have moved up there.
With such an unusual name he should be easy to spot.
Thanks
Mo

Hi Mo
If you look at FreeBMD for England & Wales you'll find the death of Orlando Glenn Dewar in Stoke Demerel, Devon in the March 1852 quarter & the birth of Orlando John Glenn Dewar in the March 1853 quarter, also in Stoke Demerel. That would look to be your starting point!

Orlando Dewar
The birth in 1848 and death in 1852 was Orlando senior's son, Orlando. A second son was born in 1853 who was also named Orlando. I have the family in 1861 living in East Stonehouse Plymouth but indexed as Demar.
I can't find them anywhere after 1861 and wondered if they might have returned to Scotland - or of course left the UK altogether!

Hi Mo
...and welcome to Talking Scot
Not seeing any obvious candidates. (later edit - sorry, should have mentioned searches were conducted on ScotlandsPeople) A search for any male with name o** d*r produces 14 matches: mostly Owens & Olivers, with surnames Danigher, Deair, Diner, Drever, Dryer, Dunbar, Dwyer, and of course, DEWAR.
The search criteria were left so open as I doubted there would be many males whose name began with "O" and with Orlando Dewar not being a common combination I suspect it is often mistranscribed.
There is one Oliver Dewar who caught my eye as his age seems about right to be your Orlando jnr; he is 17 and living in Anderston, but there does not seem to be another "Oliver" aged about 46/7 also in Anderston as might be expected, and a separate search is not returning any win* Dewar aged between 37-43 in Anderston so I have my doubts on that one.
Nothing in Stirling area other than a Hugh Osborne Dyer aged 2.
Best wishes
Lesley

In 1871 there is an Orlando J Glendower born 1855 living in Jersey, Channel Islands. There is also a Winifred born 1860.
Worth a check
I'm sorry I don't have an ancestry account but if you do, enter Glendower exact spelling - there are a few of them.
Kind regards,
Annette M

Orlando Dewar
Hi Annette
Thank you so much! It certainly looks like my family - I'll check on Ancestry tomorrow. It never occurred to me that he might travel as far as Jersey.
Orlando junior fits the family profile as we have a lot of sailors - the Dockyard is in Plymouth.
Orlando senior was a boatworker/shipwright. The 1860s saw the advent of the iron ships so Orlando's wooden ship making skills would have been redundant unless he learned a new trade so moving somewhere else would have been an option.
Thankyou again.
