Highland Dress Help

Post by Pandabean » Sun Jul 01, 2007 9:31 pm

I am just curious as to whether a black tie will go with the Prince Charlie outfit rather than a bow-tie?

It is for graduation and we are not allowed to wear bow ties. Can someone offer advice as I dont know anyone else to ask.

Thanks. :D

Don't see why not as long as it's not a wing collared shirt.

They say for graduation to wear Highland Day dress. I have looked at photos from previous graduations and it seems people wear the charlie outfit without the waistcoat and a wide black tie. All I got is a narrow black tie and the full charlie outfit and it will be with a normal white shirt.

Andy

Perhaps the photo was from a different era where wide ties were the norm, not that I remember mind you
A thin tie should be ok as long as it isnt a "Bat Maverick" string tie

All the best :D

Andy

Whatever you decide, wear it with pride and honour and you'll do :D

Most folk haven't a clue about what is/is not the appropriate costume to wear anyway so if you strut your stuff and wear your biggest smile that will be OK.

We're proud of you. Keep that in mind.

Andy,

When wearing a Prince Charlie Jacket and vest a black bow tie is appropriate.......but you should never wear a tartan bow tie for formal wear.

Andy

I would not worry too much. I was at a graduation on Monday evening and there was a rare selection of costume. If you can get a hold of a black Argyll jacket that's the best but a Charlie with a black tie sounds great too.

Well guys, thanks for the advice, i went with the waist coat, jacket and black tie in the end. It was a great day, except for the really heavy downpour before the ceremony. The ceremony itself was brilliant and went by pretty quickly.
