Ma Heid's Burlin'!!

Post by Jean Jeanie » Thu Jul 05, 2007 11:48 am

I'm trying to confirm the parents of my ggg grandfather, George Kay who died before 1855, so no death cert.

His birthplace is Ratho Midlothian (from the 1851 census) Age stated as 40.

There is a "suitable" birth for him on the IGI .....3 Dec 1809 in Ratho, parents David Kay and Margaret Scott.

Fast Forward to 1861. George Kay's wife, Charlotte, is living in Edinburgh, with a number of Visitors. These visitors are James Kay aged 48 and 5 Stevensons who look like a father and 4 children. One of these children is a David W Stevenson.

A look on the IGI for the births of the Stevenson children gives parents as William Stevenson and Margaret Kay

Back to the "birth" of George Kay in 1809 to parents David Kay and Margaret Scott. Two other children for this couple are Margaret Kay born 1820 and James Kay born 1812 (The James Kay with Charlotte in 1861?)

Margaret Kay's d.c. in 1880, aged 60, married to William Stevenson shows parents as David Kay and Margaret Scott. Informant son D.W. Stevenson

Charlotte Kay's d.c. in 1891 has D.W. Stevenson, nephew, as the informant.

Looks to me like the D.W. Stevenson, nephew, informant to Charlotte's death, is her husband George's blood nephew.

Do I need any more proof that David Kay and Margaret Scott are George's parents?

I have enough credits on SP at the moment to look for 3 more certificates.
This is where ma heid is burlin'..........What do I need to be looking for, if anything!

I looked for the death of James Kay who was with Charlotte in 1861. The only suitable one in 1879 wasn't him.

Hope you can follow this tangled tale. :?

Any advice gratefully received

Best wishes
Jean

Well it all seems pretty good to me but have you confirmed that one of George's siblings had a son of that name?

I think that would pretty much put the lid on it.

Added seconds later - That'll teach me to read posts more closely in future #-o

Hi Mary

You gave me the will to carry on

Although George and his father David died before 1855, David's wife Margaret Scott died in 1855 [woohoo]

Children listed as:-

Charlotte 43
George deceased (my George)
James 40
Margaret 34
Eliza deceased.

In 1881 William Stevenson, widower of Margaret Kay has Charlotte Kay, aged 74 living with him, shown as Aunt.

So I now have 2 generations further back having found Margaret Scott's birth in 1777 in Caputh Perth.

Oh the joys [5 cups]

Best wishes
Jean
