Samuel Cooper

Post by Sam » Mon Jul 09, 2007 5:50 pm

I am a new member and this is my first post.

My gggparents, Samuel Cooper and Elizabeth Thomson, were both born in Ireland and moved to Scotland in the late 1830s. Their two oldest children, Ann and Samuel, were also born in Ireland while the three youngest, John, Margaret and Sarah, were born in Glasgow. I have traced the son Samuel in the 1841 and 1851 censuses (in the 1851 census the surname is spelled "Couper") but then he disappears. I cannot find him in any later census and there is no sign of a death record post 1855.

He could have returned to Ireland or he could have died between 1851 and 1855.

Can anyone advise me where to look?

Yours hopefully
Sam

Hi Sam
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

A few questions to help us help you:
Do you know what year Samuel was born? Was he old enough to have an occupation in the 1851 census? Is he living alone or with his family in 1851?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Sam

Can I extend a welcome too.
Questions - we like. Finding the answers can take a bit of time and a few inspired guesses.

To add to Lesley's questions :(
What part of Glasgow were they in in 1841 and 1851 as it might narrow down where to look for possible burials.

Hi Lesley and Russell

Thanks for your welcome. There is room for confusion with this set of ancestors! But... I think that Samuel was born in Ireland around 1836 and that his brother John was boorn in Glasgow around 1838/9, indicating that the family migrated between those dates.
The 1841 census has them in the parish of Barony St Lukes (although young John is not with them then - for some reason he appears elsewhere on census day) while the 1851 census has them in the parish of Calton (although the details for Samuel and John seem to be the wrong way round). Both Samuel and John are down as Cotton Spinner Piecers.
While I have more information about John (my direct ancestor) Samuel seems to disappear.

I hope this info helps you to help me.

Regards
Sam
