William Gillespie

Post by Baldy » Tue Jul 10, 2007 4:51 am

I do not have access to 1871 & 1881 census,so am asking "if" anyone may be able help me withe the following please.

I am looking for the parents of William Gillespie (dob:- 1864)
Have been led to believe that he married Janet Callendar Beattie abt 1897

The information that I have been given tells me that he was born in Dumfries.(possible Tinwald)

I would like to be able to verify the given details so as I am researching the correct person.

Thanks in Advance

This looks like him in 1881 .............

Dwelling: Kirkhill
Census Place: Wamphray, Dumfries, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0224053 GRO Ref Volume 853-A EnumDist 3 Page 2
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John CARRUTHERS U 64 M Wamphray, Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Farmer Of 1200 Acres Employing 6 Men 4 Girls
William GILLESPIE U 17 M Dryfesdale, Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Farm Serv
Jessie AMOS U 28 F Drumelzier, Peeble, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Cook (Domestic)
Elizabeth CORRIE U 15 F Wamphray, Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Housemaid Dom
Jean FERGUSON U 23 F Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: Dairymaid
Mary ROSS U 17 F Lochmaben, Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Serv
Occ: General Serv

But he's left home to work !

Dryfesdale is only a couple of parishes away from Tinwald, to the East, with Lochmaben parish in between.

On ScotlandsPeople, in 1871, you'll find him at home in Dryfesdale as a 6 year old. It looks quite possible that he was the result of a second marriage as far as his father is concerned. This is confirmed by the fact that his father is shown as a Widower in 1861.

That will lead you directly to the (re-)marriage register entry for William's father, and at least one of the death register entries for his grandparents, if you don't already have these........

Hi David.
Thank you for the info on William.

Hi Baldy,

If you do a marriage search for William Gillespie and Beattie (no first name to cover the many variations of the first name) 1890 to 1910 (to cover any element of doubt) and you will find only one result. It is in the right area of Scotland - just across the river (the county boundary) from Dumfries (I think it is part of Dumfries nowadays - not an area I know well).

He can be found quite easily in the 1901 census - he does not move far between his marriage and the census.

All the best,

AndrewP

Yes, - one sibling and two half-siblings, - so the spend of a few credits at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is recommended !

See AndrewP's post re the marriage...........
