Still trying to figure out what became of some of my great great grandfather's 11 siblings. Of the children of Hugh MCGREGOR & Mary HOUSTON (from Balquhidder, Perth to Knapdale, Argyll in mid 1830s), I have found that both Joshua Bowden MCGREGOR & Joshua MCGREGOR (yes 2 separate children) died in childhood. Some blanks I would love to fill in ...
1) Robert MCGREGOR b. 1836, Balquhidder ... is he the same Robert MCGREGOR as is found on the 1881 census, age 45, fisherman, married to Janet ? with children Hugh, Neil, Janet, Duncan & Annie? The given names would fit fairly well.
2) Hugh MCGREGOR b. 1842, N. Knapdale ... no idea what happened to him.
3) Duncan MCGREGOR b. 1844, N. Knapdale ... no idea.
4) Mary MCGREGOR b. 1846, N. Knapdale ... no idea.
5) Peter MCGREGOR b. 1854, S. Knapdale, was living in Govan with his mother, Mary MCGREGOR, at 18 Logie St. in 1881 ... she died before 1891 & his brother, John, married & moved out ... where did Peter go?
That's enough questions for now (oh believe me, there's more!) Thank you very much!
Mary

Hi Mary
Best wishes
Lesley
Have you tried a search for their deaths? That should confirm parents.1) Robert MCGREGOR b. 1836, Balquhidder ... is he the same Robert MCGREGOR as is found on the 1881 census, age 45, fisherman, married to Janet ? with children Hugh, Neil, Janet, Duncan & Annie? The given names would fit fairly well.

Hi Mary,
I saw Peter was a joiner apprentice in 1871, then went off on a wild goose chase and found a joiner of that name in England... but I don't think he's the right one. Then I looked your Peter up with his mother in 1881 and saw he was a boiler maker by then. So what do you think of this Peter?
1900
731 Sixty first Street, Town of Lake, City of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois
McGreggor Peter, head, born Nov 185? (1857?) in Scotland, age 43, boiler maker
Margaret, wife, born Jany 1865 in England
Andrew J, son, born Jany 1896 in Illinois, age 4
The enumerator did not get the year of immigration
But in 1910 and especially in 1920 it looks like he says 1895, which would work.
Does this one seem likely?
Regards,
Sarah

Chasing my McGregors
Hi Mary,
I too am chasing McGregors. They can be very difficult to find.
I'm really commenting on your two Joshua's. It was common to name the next child after the death of one, by the dead one's name. In my own Shaw family, I had a Robert, then a James, then another Robert, the first Robert having died, presumably after James was born.
Re the McGregors, I have Duncan McGregor m. Kat Clark abt 1770,
Haven't found a marriage yet. They had
Alexander 1776 Achlyne
John
Donald
Duncan b. Killin m. Henrietta Isabella Fergusson 1821 Callander
Hugh
Patrick
Katherine
Christian
They were all born around the same general area.
Just thought I'd mention them you never know do you!
.
Happy hunting

Re: Chasing My MCGREGORs
Like you I'm chasing Mcgregor ancestor's and I'm new to this site but on many other,s. I,m researching a John McGregor born June 10 1800 in Perthshire Scotland. Married to a Catherine McGregor(seems to be her maiden name as well as married) born 1800 also in Perthshire. Not sure when or where they married in Perthshire,I have come across many erroneus and confusing mixture of times. Don't know either of their parents names. They immigrated to near Renfrew On. Canada in 1830-1831. They proceeded to have their children there in their 30's. They had Isabella born and died in 1832, Duncan 1833, Gregor 1836, John Jr. 1837, Catherine around 1840 and Margaret around 1842. Don't have the faintest idea of how to go from hear to connect too John or Catherine's parents tree. John died Nov.21.1886 Horton Twp.Renfrew On. Canada. His beloved Catherine died July 13. 1863 in Horton Twp. Renfrew On. Canada. Would appreciate any help from anyone on the forum.
Thankyou.
Thankyou.

Re: Chasing My MCGREGORs
Hi there,
Are you still trying to find John and Catherine's ancestors? I looked up John's brother Moses in the 1851/1861 censuses, and found him living with his wife and family at Luss on Lochlomondside. Both censuses have his birthplace listed as Balquhidder in Perthshire, around 1806. From familysearch, I'd say this is his mostly likely birth record:
Moses Mcgregor
christening: 22 November 1804 BALQUHIDDER, PERTH, SCOTLAND
father: Duncan Mcgregor
mother: Kathrine Mcainsh
Given that he seems to have survived well into his eighties (he's can be found in the 1891 census living in Killin), you should be able to find a death record for him on Scotland's People which will confirm his parents.
Regards
Ross

Re: Chasing My MCGREGORs
In a similar vein for Catherine's siblings, I found an Alexander MacGregor with his wife Ann in the 1851 census working as a Mill Wright in Lecropt Stirlingshire (not quite the details you gave, but not far off). This led me too the following tree on familysearch:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:332H-DGB
Again, if this is the right person, and the dates on this tree are correct then you should be able to find his death record on Scotland's People which would confirm the parents.

Re: Chasing My MCGREGORs
Too everyone who has helped me with my McGregor queries thank you so much. I am in contact with someone else from scotland who is also assisting me. some confusion with names. Alexanders father definitely Gregor it seems and mother Euphemia, but I have been informed her father was Alexander not Duguald.
Also Moses mother is listed as McAinish, but in other documents as Campbell. Confusing. Also Moses father Duncan also was a son of a Gregor Mcgregor it seems.
