Scott - Help please with a brick wall...

Post by Spider-Girl » Fri Jul 13, 2007 8:54 am

Good morning. I've had this brick wall for a wee while now and thought I would give talkingscot a try.

Ok, my great-great-great grandfather was James Scott and from the 1851 census, it looks like he was born around 1810/1811 in Kirkpatrick Fleming near Annan. He married Mary Graham on 29 June 1832 in Annan. He died on the 19 July 1872 at Port Street in Annan and his death extract states he is illegitimate, so only his mother his named - Margaret Scott.

It's Margaret that's the problem! I haven't been able to find anything on her! Any advice as to the best way forward or where I should maybe be looking? If there is a way forward!

Many thanks.

Hi Spider-girl
That looks like quite a difficult one. Have you tried the 1841 census to see where James is and perhaps any sign of his mother in the same area? An occupation or address might help you to pin her down a little, though she may not still be around by 1841.

In the 1861 census is his place of birth still Kirkpatrick Fleming?

Not seeing anything obvious on IGI, but I'm sure you have been there anyway!

There may be some mention in the Kirk Session records of his mother if he was illegitimate. A bit of a long shot when the Parish is perhaps not certain. There don't appear to be any OPR deaths for Annan parish either.

Not much help I'm afraid. Maybe someone else can come up with something more inspired....

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley. In the 1841 census, James is married and living at Newbie Barns, Annan. In the 1861 census his birthplace is again given as Kirkpatrick Fleming. I'll give the Kirk Session records ago, see if anything turns up.

Thanks again.
