WETHERALL family, Glasgow

Post by nicola » Fri Jul 13, 2007 7:06 pm

I have a hit a blank... I am trying desperately to trace the WETHERALL family of Glasgow - my paternal grandfathers family.

Sadly with the sudden loss of my father and with both his parents dead I have a real desire to know more and yet have hit a blank at my great grandfather and cannot trace the family any further.

My father was DONALD SCOTT WETHERALL (born 28.04.1955) and who sadly – very suddenly and unexpectedly died 15 March 2006.

His father was MARK WETHERALL (known as JOCK) who was born August 22nd 1921 in Glasgow. His birth certificate reveals his father to be MARK WETHERALL which his mother is recorded as JANE McAVOY (or MARTIN) and states she was the wife of a JOHN MARTIN (married April 1904).

My grandfather Jock went on to marry MARGARET SCRYMGEOUR NEILSON, b. June 1924 and they travelled south of the border to bring up their family.

Here my information stops. There was some suggestion when my granddad was alive that his father had originated in the Lurgan area, and an Irish connection to the family. But I cannot confirm this. There was also talk of his having siblings – but again I am at a loss and cannot confirm this… Hence this is very much a plea for help!!!

Here is to finding someone at theis forum who can help!

Sincere thanks for reading....
Nicola

Hi Nicola
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D
With that particular spelling, WETHERALL, according to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk there are not that many of that name in Scotland, so it should not be too difficult to find some of them:
  • Census 1841 4
    Census 1851 5
    Census 1861 4
    Census 1871 6
    Census 1881 12
    Census 1891 2
    Census 1901 3
    Old Parish Records Banns & Marriages 1553 - 1854 4
    Statutory Register Births 1855 - 1906 17
    Statutory Register Marriages 1855 - 1931 13
    Statutory Register Deaths 1855 - 1956 31
    Wills & Testaments 1513 - 1901 2
They look quite a manageable group from the list above, but, I bet the name is prone to a few creative mis-spellings! e.g. Weatherall, Witherall etc.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Nicola,
This looks like an intriguing family in the 1901 census:

130 So Willington St, Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Govan
James Weatherall, 46, head, born Co Armagh, Ireland, Boot Shoe Maker
Ellen Weatherall, 47, wife, born Lurgan, Co Armagh, Ireland
Thos Thomson, 44, Goodbro, born Lurgan, Co Armagh, Ireland, Boot Maker

I have to tell you that in the Ancestry index the place of birth is "Surgan"... which I have interpreted as Lurgan  Also, since Thomas is the "Goodbro", I assume that means brother -in-law, so you have Ellen's surname :D

And maybe this is a family member:

Registration Number:625/3
Registration district:Bellshill
Civil parish:Bothwell
County:Lanarkshire

And finally, a coachman:

Name: Richard Wetherell
Age: 24
Relationship: Coachman
Where born:Ireland
Registration Number: 625/2
Registration district: Holytown
Civil parish: Holytown
County: Lanarkshire

Sarah,

I think you assumed correctly - there is a marriage between James Wetherall and Ellen Thomson in 1871 at Shankhill, Lurgan.

I live in New Zealand & I am researching my maternal ancestors, WETHERALL/SIMPSON who seemed to have moved between Glasgow & Ireland in the 1800s before they emigrated to New Zealand. I am attempting to trace where & when Thomas WETHERALL(or WITHEROW) & Mary ROSEBORURGH (or ROSBOROUGH) were born in the 1700s. Mary died in June 1834 in Glasgow & is buried at St Mungo's Burial Ground, Glasgow. We are visiting Glasgow in Sept & I would like to locate her burial plot/lair. Does anyone know if there is a plan at the cemetery (I have the Lair no.) or do I need to visit the Mitchell Library first to identify it?
