Any tips for a very homesick missing his Family & Scotland now in Spokane nephew?
Sister is pulling her hair out as hubbie has just got a new job & they are relocating to Thurso. She tries to webcam & phone two/three times a week.
I gave a tongue roasting & "when i was in USA I was on my owny ow"A phone call was a luxury etc" Ended in tears for both of us.
Any hints/tips for this really homesick boy?? We are sending photos & little pressies(silly things) any other ideas??
I wonder how he would have fared a hundred or more years ago??

Hi, Joette,
Sorry, can't give any help on this one. He is very lucky to have such a loving family who keep in regular touch with him. You think that all your problems will be over once the offspring can stand on their own two feet - who said that :?:
Hope he finds a way to cope with it soon.

If he's "longin' fer his ain folk", it would appear there's lots 'o them in and around Spokane (or at least, a lot with ties anyway)

Depending on how long he is there, volunteering is a good way to meet folk with similar interests and fill the time not taken with school or work. Big Brothers is a good organization - children are good for lifting the spirits.

Hi Frances
Toss the caper
Now, I'd quite happily take part in that event - love olives, but not too keen on capers....

Best wishes
Lesley

Well, there's little me just a couple of hours away, but I'm afraid I just have the genealogy interest, and not the appropriate accent and cultural upbringing! I could try to fake the accent, but I'm sure I'd be found out...

Lesley! I won't tell my husband you are tossing the capers  He would be quite distressed (even though, truth be told, I'd be glad to toss 'em too ) However, if anyone on this list is into tossing cabers, we'll be happy to recruit them when it comes time to putting up the log walls on our house.
Regards,
Sarah in North Idaho

Thanks for all that.He is like a bear when he has not got control over his emotions & I think he didn't realise how far away he would feel. I think being with other Scots is a great idea-even the "Blood" ones like Sarah(thanks).
I will e-mail him this lot & see how he fares. He is being Mister Mom at the moment whilst his green card is sorted out.Too much time on his hands so a bit of Voluntary Work would be a great idea.No time to brood.
Thanks again I know he will love Spokane once he is working & they have their own place. The in-laws are great & treat him like a King but they need their own place.

Joette,
My son has just spent 6 months in Richmond, Virginia and has now moved to Alexandria for another 12 months, although he misses much from Australia he has used the opportunity, when he can get time off, to do as much travelling in the U.S as possible.
He has enjoyed the hospitality of the American people and doesn't regret his decision to spend time there.
I am sure it will be only a matter of time until your nephew settles in.
