John G. Robertson
I am researching John G. Robertson who was b. 15 Feb 1880 in Hutchestown, Glasgow, Scotland and died on 14 Jun 1975 in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. I cannot seem to locate immigration information even though he came over with several family members. He said he arrived in Toronto during the great fire of 1904.

Hello Schexshe
Welcome to TalkingScot!
Have you checked the 1901 Census of Canada on www.Ancestry.com yet? I would but my subscription has run out. There is a listing for a John Robertson b. 1880 and his residence in 1901 is Muskoka and Parry Sound Ontario. This could very well be your man?

Yes, I've checked the census information and have been lucky enough to trace him back to his grand parents. He was married before coming to Canada to a person I believe was Mary Ann Smith. They were married on 12 April 1901 - they had a daughter Helen born in 1903. Mary Ann is believed to have died about. 1904, as this is when John came to Canada with his young daughter, his mother in law and a few other family members. He married Isabella Sandell Martin on July 8, 1910 - John is listed on their marriage registration as a widower. Isabella was my great grandmother - she died on 31 December 1922 in Toronto of Lobar Pneumonia. I'm wanting to figure out how they all got to Canada and about their ancestors from Scotland.
Thanks a lot for your input...it's nice to know that someone is keeping an eye out!!!

While he might have arrived in Toronto in 1904, the question is where did he enter N America?Schexshe wrote:I am researching John G. Many people came in first via one of the US East coast ports, then north (and many did the reverse via Canada!).
Have a look at the pay-per-view/subscription site http://www.findmypast.com/passengerList ... art.action which has passenger lists for the ships leaving the UK.

Yeah, it seems like a whole family could arrive out of nowhere! John arrived with at least one of his brother, his mother-in-law, several brothers and his young daughter.
Doe anyone know if there is a way to figure out which ships may have docked in Toronto around the time of the great fire....maybe I can back track - I haven't had any luck so far with this method.

A site to keep an eye on is:
http://members.shaw.ca/nanaimo.fhs/#mozTocId827533
The Nanaimo FHS has undertaken an enormous task on transcribing the passenger lists from 1900 to 1921. As stated on their website:
Quebec Ports for the periods 10 Nov 1907 listings from to 13 Oct 1910 has been completed and the index, comprising of 319,015 listings from 656 ship arrivals, are shown on these pages. Currently the project is indexing Quebec arrivals from 1907 and is working back to 1900.
I did find one passenger list on Olive Tree site that was from Scotland to Canada in either 1903 or 04,
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/sarmation1903.shtml.
I'm still trying to find many names on passenger lists too and hope the above helps someone
