ROSS-SMITH

Post by LuAnn » Wed Aug 01, 2007 6:15 pm

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I am looking for information on my grandmothers family Helen Ross SMITH born to Helen ROSS and William SMITH. They were married Mar 06, 1880 and had 13 children of whom my grandmother was the 13th. My grandmother and at least two of her siblings both brothers came to Canada and a sister went to New Zealand. As I am researching from a distance I am hoping that someone can point me to some sites that are inexpensive (free is even better) where I could try and follow this family back. Any help would be most gratefully appreciated

Hi LuAnn,

A warm welcome to [talkingscot] [scotland-flag]

Could you tell us where Helen Ross Smith was born and where her parents were married?

If the children's names seem right then you can try searching for their births on Scotlands People. For the adults I'd use +/- 3 years as ages could sometimes be "guesstimates".

Thank you so much Mary, I am pretty sure this is the family, many of the names are right, and the address. One question, as I am not familiar with occupation names in Scotland, is a wood mechanic the same as a sawyer or wood cutter both descriptions used for william on the two birth registrations that I have for the family.

I really appreciate your quick response, and my father who knows very little about his mother's family will be quite thrilled to get this info.
Best wishes from Canada
LuAnn

To be honest with you LuAnn, some of the transcriptions in Ancestry can be anything from innaccurate to downright hilarious. "Wood Mechanic" could very well be "Wood Machinist".

The only way to be sure is to look at the original census image on Scotlands People on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ , the best Scottish family research by far. It is pay to view but the information you'll get from the Birth, Marriage and Death certificates as well as the Censuses, will amaze you.

You and your father may very well be in for a few treats.
