Hi
I have been tracing my Christie ancestors and have come across my
g x 4 grandfather John Christie marrying a person called Campbell McCarra.
I would like to know whether Campbell was a female christian name?
The IGI has them marrying on 2 July 1777 and also having 9 children. The only book on Scottish christain names I have says that Campbell was a clan name sometimes used as a christian name. As it does not indicate male or female can it be assumed Campbell was sometimes a female name?
thanks
John Bird

Hi John
I have an ancestor who was christened Stewart. I can't see anything in her parents history that even hints at why they called her that.
At least she chose more mundane names for her children. (
Maybe it was her husband who chose them
)
The name Christian has also been used for males and females in the past.
We seem to have more fixed ideas these days of what constitutes a 'male' name as opposed to a 'female' name.

One of my lot was Douglas Clark, born in Edinburgh c1841. She married a William Tait, but she didn't pass her name on (as far as I can see, so far
)
