Andrew Jardine - Can't find his birth or death

Post by darylrodger » Tue Aug 21, 2007 9:46 pm

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone help me with this ancestral mystery ?

I'm having problems finding another ancestor. I can't seem to find Andrew Jardine. :? According to family search, he was born c. 1801 in Dryfsdale, Dumfries, or in 1805 in Sanquhar, Dumfries. He married Margaret McClounie on 16th Sept 1830 in Dumfries. His son William was born on 7th Apr 1840 in Closeburn.

I would love to find his b. & d.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

If you can find the marriage or deaths of any of the children you might get a better idea of when he died if he is shown as deceased in the parent column on those certificates.

IGI give these as probable children, but they are mainly submissions, so don't take the dates/places as gospel...

...and in 1861 he is back to claiming birth in Dryfsdale (and his birth year is creeping backward):

1861
Burleywhag, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire
Andrew Jardine, 64, head, born Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire, Shepherd
Marget Jardine, 40, Wife, born Morton, Dumfriesshire
William Jardine, 21, Son, born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire, Shepherd
Mary Jardine, 16, Daughter, born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire
Janet Jardine, 12, Daughter, born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire
Andrew H Jardine, 9, Son, born Closeburn, Dumfriesshire

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. Oh dear, by 1871 son Andrew Hellen Jardine is living in the poorhouse in Morton :( What happened? William is the shepherd at Burleywhag now. No sign of the parents. So that will perhaps give you a time frame for searching SP for the death certs.

Hi Folks,

Thanks to everyone who offered help & advice regarding Andrew.
Well, I've found his death cert! :D He died on 26th Mar 1868 in Closeburn, Dumfries. It stated that he was 83 yrs old, which means he fibbed about his date of birth! only about 15 years out! 1785ish, no less.
It gives his parents names, but I can't make out his mother's maiden name al all :? Something like Migh?sm?n. It's driving me daft!

Can anyone help ?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,
If you put the image in the gallery I'm sure we would all like to have a go at deciphering it! Instructions are here:

Hi Daryl,

Glad you found it. :D

I'd go more for 1801 ish as, although his age changes a bit on the census records none of them are as far out as 15 years. The most important thing is the info was supplied by Andrew himself.

Anyway hopefully all will be revealed when his mother's name is deciphered.

1841 -

Piece: SCT1841/816 Place: Closeburn -Dumfries-shire Enumeration District: 9
Civil Parish: Closeburn Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 9 Page: 2
Address: Barliewhag

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
JARDEN Andrew M 40 Agricultural Labourer Dumfries-shire
JARDEN Margaret F 26 Dumfries-shire
JARDEN Alexander M 8 Dumfries-shire
JARDEN James M 3 Dumfries-shire
JARDEN William M 1 Dumfries-shire
MCKENNIE Agness F 12 Dumfries-shire

I think I'm right in saying that Dumfries is one of those places where LDS only indexed female births and christenings in some parishes.

So although his birth may not appear from a search of the IGI it may be on SP.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi Daryl,

I presume you meant Andrew's death certificate - Alexander was his father.

I'll go for Janet Jardine, M.S. Wightman (Deceased).

The online IGI gives a potential sibling for your Andrew:

JEAN JARDINE - Christening: 27 APR 1783 Dryfesdale, Dumfries-shire

All the best,

AndrewP

I'd agree that Wightman is much more likely, but the initial letter looks identical to the N's in Not Certified and No Medical Attendant and does not look like the W in Widower... #-o But a search for the name Nightman only gets a few hits on SP...
