Malloy ancestors
I am looking for information on Scottish Malloys. What I have so far is that my ggggggrandfather John Malloy, Jr. was born in Scotland (possibly Argyll) in 1757. He married Effie Smith in 1783 and had 2 children, Daniel (1784) and John III (1786). Effie died and he married Nancy Falkner. Togther they had 6 children, then emigrated to America (North Carolina) along with sister Barbara Malloy and spouse John McPhail,Jr. I am looking for infornation on John Malloy, Sr., or any other siblings/relatives that may have remained in Scotland or emigrated at a different time. Can anyone help???? Thanks - Melissa Malloy Wyatt

Hello Melissa,
Welcome to Talking Scot!
As I'm sure you have checked, in the IGI the only extracted birth of a John Malloy in the right time frame was the son of Duncan, not John. Do you have documentation that his father was indeed John?
JOHN MILLOY
Christening: 30 MAR 1757
Inveraray And Glenaray, Argyll, Scotland
Father: DUNCAN MILLOY
Mother: JANNET MCLEAN
There are 6 j*n* m?l*oy* born between 1750 and 1760 on the Scotland's People website (see link at the top of this page.) One has a father named John. I haven't checked to see if it looks feasible, though.
Otherwise, I note that the marriage to Effie Smith is a submission on the IGI also, so it may or may not be accurate.
The marriage to Nancy Falkner isn't in the IGI, but there is an extracted marriage to Anne Fisher 16 Jan 1797 in Inverarary and Glenaray, Argyll. Since Anne and Nancy were the same name, and Falkner and Fisher look to me close enough to confuse if the handwriting was bad enough... Well, I wouldn't discount that one.
But it is always best to go backwards from what you know for sure (and I know how difficult and frustrating it can be to make that jump from the U.S. back to Scotland in the 18th century
) Is your John Malloy the one in Robeson County, North Carolina in 1800? If so, I have seen a reference to a will that may be the basis for your information-- do you have the text of the will? It might help us make educated guesses...
All the best,
Sarah

john malloy,jr.
Sarah - Thanks so much for your quick reply. Most of my info came from an old Malloy family bible which my grandmother copied in the 1950's. In this reference, John is listed as a Jr. Another Malloy descendant has found John, b. 1757 to be the son of John Molloy b. 1726, Jura Island, Argyll Scotland. There was also a brother named Angus, b.1745, Jura Island, Charles, b. 1753 Jura Island, another Angus b. 1755 Argylshire Scotland, and Catherine, b. 1756, Argylshire, m. to Daniel Paterson. I have not been able to find any other reference to John, Sr. Malloys still reside at Scotswood, original property in Lumber Bridge, North Carolina.
Please let me know if you run across any more information about my family's history. Thanks again for your help. Melissa
