Researching Taylor

Post by Jacobsmom » Thu Aug 23, 2007 3:04 am

I am researching my Scottish Heritage, we know very little and hope to be able to find distant relatives.

James Rhind Taylor born 1858, Dunbartonshire.
Elizabeth Moir (Laird) Taylor born in 1862, Clackmannanshire.
These are my great grandparents.

Janet Moir Rhind Taylor was my grandmother, born in 1895. She had several brothers and sisters.
Mary born in 1882, Grahamston.
James, who passed away at the age of 15 in 1903. Grahamston.
William Taylor born in 1891, Laurieston
Robert Muirhead Rhind Taylor born in 1893, Laurieston
Martin Taylor born in 1898, Laurieston
Alexander born in 1901, Laurieston

Do know that at least two of my Uncles served in WWI
Martin served in the Black Watch
Robert served in the B.E.F.
Both were stationed in France at one point.

I would like to know if we have relatives out there or if anyone can help me further my research. I do have pics of our uncles in uniform, just don't know who is who and I'm sure one was in the Cavalry.

If any of this sounds familiar to you please contact me, I'd love to hear from you.
Thank you
Take care,

Stephanie

Hello, Stephanie! Welcome to Talking Scot [talkingscot]

Is this your James Taylor in the 1861 census? If so, with such a large family you must have lots of distant cousins in this line!

1861
Main St Taylors Land, Bonhill, Dumbartonshire
John Taylor, 46, Head, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Retired Shoemaker
Isabella Taylor, 43, Wife, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Retired Wife
Mary Taylor, 19, Daughter, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Domestic Servant
William Taylor, 16, Son, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Shoemaker
Agnes Taylor, 12, Daughter, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Domestic Servant
Alexander Taylor, 10, Son, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Scholar
Janet Taylor, 8, Daughter, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire, Scholar
John Mc A Taylor, 5, Son, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire
James Taylor, 2, Son, born Bonhill, Dumbartonshire

I wasn't sure whether you meant that Elizabeth's maiden name was Laird or Moir, but since I couldn't find any Lairds of that name born in Clackmannan I'm guessing this is she in 1871 with her grandmother... is that correct?

1871
Lower Mill St, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire
Aron More, 79, Head, born Gelvin, Kinrossshire, Hand Seamstress
Elizabeth More, 9, Grandaughter, born Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scholar

If you are looking for relatives, one thing to do (and besides it's fun :-) is to try to follow down the descendants of your ancestors' siblings. You'll have your hands full with Taylors, and Elizabeth's family looks to be a challenge. Do you have her birth certificate?

All the best,
Sarah

I'm not sure really if these are related

This could be my great-grandfathers side of the family. I took my info from the 1901 Scotland Census. Didn't go back any further because of the confusion on my part and the fact that the names are so regularly used in the Taylor line it seems.

Laird is my great-grandmothers maiden name. I also couldn't find any Lairds in Clackmannanshire. But I'm pretty certain this is her maiden name. And with the spelling being alittle off for Moir, I'm just not sure. They were married in 1878 supposedly in Falkirk.

I found and purchased a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate which I gave to my mother for her eightieth birthday back in July. I should have copied down the info then, I did not but I am sure that Elizabeth Moir (Laird) Taylor is her mother.

My problem right now is that I have photo postcards dating back to the 1914's that have people in them that I cannot identify. My mother knows very little of our Scottish background and I am getting conflicting stories from her. I really want to identify those people in the photos, especially my male relatives that served in the military. There is one who is on different horses in about three of these photos, it is apparently where I get my love of horses so I want badly to know who he is.

Anyway, thanks for your info, it is greatly appreciated and I will keep on plugging along. It has been fun and frustrating but I'm hoping if I can get these pics out there that someone will recognized something and hopefully we'll make a connection.

Take care,
Stephanie
