Conum

Has anyone ever run across this name or something spelled close to it?

Even though it is probably English...just wondered if anyone as ever seen the name in a record.

I have a Martha Conum married to a Benjamin Murdock. Benjamin was born about 1796 in Nova Scotia. For some reason marries in England..maybe he was with the Royal Navy at that point? I have found two sons a James, 1825, and John, 1827, in a 1950 New York census as ship carpenters, both born in England. Later John has a farm in eastern Michigan along side his father, Benjamin Murdock. By the 1860 Michigan census they are on the west side of Michigan as farmers.Seems James stayed in New York. I have also found a daughter, Jane, 1833 London, who seems to have gone back to Nova Scotia and marries there, dies in Washington.

I know they are not "Scottish", if I have the correct parents for Benjamin, they and the grandparents came from Ireland to Nova Scotia. It is said they had been in Ireland from Scotland for a century by the time of some of the uprisings.

Guess I'm just curious if anyone has run across the name....

thanks,
Karen

Sounds like Corum? Thomas Corum was the founder of the Childrens Foundling Hospital in London. He was appalled by the number of babies corpes he came across in the streets & thought that Mothers should have a place they could deposit their babies safely. Many were left with identifying items on them which I am sure were left to enable the Mothers to perhaps reclaim their child when things got better. It would melt a heart of steel to view these little items!
I have never come across the name before although I think there was a Chief Constable of the Metropolitan Police called Conrum.
Names were not standardised in spelling/pronounciation until well into the 19th Century.
