Catherine......???

Catherine married Richard Wood on 23 sept 1848 in St john's Episcopal Church in Edinburgh. Here, her name is given as Catherine Johnston

On the birth certificate of several of her children, her name is given as Catherine Johnston Sleigh ( or Sleight )while on the wedding certificate of Sarah Johnston Wood (daughter) in 1873 her previous name is given as Slight.

In the census of 1851 and 1881, I found the relevant household and in each case her place of birth is given as Hutton BerwickScotland and her age gives a DoB of c. 1824

But I can't find any trace of her birth on IGI or SP- I've tried under both surnames, I've checked every Catherine on the IGI index for the relevant years in Hutton, I've even looked for a possible marrage before her marriage to Richard in 1848.

Incidentally, although I have traced her marriage and birth of five children to her and Richard, I have also drawn a blank on the birth of Isabella Wood who appears to be their oldest child - born in Monimail in c.1848 (Census info)

Ideas on where else to look ?? Or have I missed something??

Hi Mo-Anne

I think the clue is in where they were married. Pre 1855 the records on SP and even the IGI are mostly those of the established Church of Scotland. It seems that your Catherine was an Episcopaelian and as a result her baptism if it occured may have been noted in the records of that church. The records of some non established churches are at the National Archives of Scotland in series I think CH3.

You could check on the website to see if they have any records from that Church.

Thanks for these leads - I can't find Richard's birth either so I suspect the records for the family must be "elsewhere'"

Richard was born in Inveresk/Musselburgh:
Catherine in Hutton
Isabella in Monimail so any other links to Episcopalian records in these areas appreciated
