Hi Stew

Thanks for your input - I'm with you all the way, except for the last one. I'm liking the "before" suggestion, as it fits with what I know - in other words, that's what I want it to be!! :D

Annette - oops, I think I may have a can of worms here. That certainly looks like John in 1881 - BUT his wife is alive and well and living with her married daughter and family in 1881, 1891 and 1901.

That Easson middle name is jangling bells with me too, but can't think quite why at the moment.

I'd better go and start digging - starting with checking the originals of the census entries 1881-1901 and see if wife no 1 thinks she is a widow or what!

I'll get back to you......

Cheers

Ellen.

Update...........

OK - John started a new family with Magdalene Buchan (Mary) around 1873/4, looks like had 6 children with her and stayed with her till he died in 1895.

At least they had the good grace not to marry. They registered the children as illegitimate, but both John and Magdalene signing.

On the 1891 he has again said he was born Beith, Ayrshire.

Then when he died, in 1895, Magdalene did put his legal wife on the cert and she signed as informant "housekeeper"!

Thanks so much Annette - you put me on the right track to finding John at last. I now have his parents and can get moving backwards again.

A bit of colour for my friend's tree - I'm doing this as a silver wedding present! Hope there are not too many more shocks!

Thanks again everyone.

Ellen.

PS - John's wife Euphemia/Mary DID call herself a widow from 1881.

John's details column I read as

John Campbell
Mercht
36 years
..... and then ?ark or ?ash with the ? most probably being a "B", - see the registrar's "B" in "Boys" and how the vertical stroke of his B is separate from the rest of the letter.

Again using the technique of looking at other entries, I'd confirm the interpretation of others that the mystery word after "1 Girl" is a faded "before".
