Thanks for your input - I'm with you all the way, except for the last one. I'm liking the "before" suggestion, as it fits with what I know - in other words, that's what I want it to be!!
Annette - oops, I think I may have a can of worms here. That certainly looks like John in 1881 - BUT his wife is alive and well and living with her married daughter and family in 1881, 1891 and 1901.
That Easson middle name is jangling bells with me too, but can't think quite why at the moment.
I'd better go and start digging - starting with checking the originals of the census entries 1881-1901 and see if wife no 1 thinks she is a widow or what!
