Hi Fiona

Before you go on SP again look back at some of the earliest posts about the census and SP. It takes a bit of time but you will be able to print off almost a pamphlet of tips about searching. Then put down on paper all the important info you have on the person
Age
address if know
General locality
Occupation _not just miner but coal or ironstone - helps localise.
Every possible variation in spelling you can think of !! then ask on TS for more suggestions!!
Sound alike/look alike names
Family forenames and how they may have changed
Middle names
Nick names some survive through generations in families
List where sons & daughters ended up after marriage

Seems a lot but it helps your thinking in other ways too

As pinkshoes suggested a page with 25 names costs the same as 1 solitary offering so use wild cards to increase your chances.

There will still be times you have to open up half a dozen certificates to see if one is the right one

Good luck :D

Hi Fiona

My Campbells are from Caithness but back so far I haven't been able to find out anything yet. Janet Campbell married Donald Oman probably in Halkirk about 1795 and had 4 sons that we know of - George b1791, Isaac b 1796, Nathaniel (My line g-g-gfather) b 1799 and Daniel b 1801. We searched the records last summer in Wick but did not know enough to make the best use of limited time so dead stop there for the moment.
Lyle is on my wife's side but is from Paisley/Johnstone area.
Lots of them live in the village now but we have no way to prove the line - YET.
Other Caithness names in my line are Brock, Millar, Bain.
We learned the hard, and expensive!, way how to search the various resources.

Thanks for all your tips.
I will put them to good use.
I have given up trying to put in common names.
Sometimes I get 19 pages or on a couple of occassions I have come up with the message that there is too many to list and had to refine the search.
The tip to go back to early searches is worth while once you have a bit more knowledge. It really annoys me when I think I have the right one and waste 5 credits.
My Brother in law is doing their english relatives and is constantly saying how lucky we are to have SP
