I can sympathise with all the various indexers' interpretations :!:

Knowing that it should be BITTLES , then I can easily see that in the entry, but without that prior knowledge I could have been in difficulties .............. :cry:

Given the degree to which the interpretation is open to argument (i.e. without prior knowledge) you may well find the the GROS stance is that the index entry should stand as it is.

Personally I'd argue for the approach where the BETTLEY entries are allowed to stand but BITTLES entries are added to the index. If I remember correctly Ancestry adopt a similar approach.

Now that I have started using the wildcards I have found several misreads of the name...Bettler and Bettles and have filled in some blanks in their history

Hi Alan,

You'll also find that using wildcards even with some of the commoner names can reveal rellies you could never find before, especially with the Mc/Mac brigade.

I never could find my own MacDonald grandmother's BC till David told me to try M*cDonald. There she was :lol:
