Hi Jean,

{Hi Ina.....

In case you're still looking for that pesky button....check out the top left corner of the top dark blue header. You'll note letters in white that say BUY MORE next to how many credits you currently have. Click on the buy more and voila you'll be whisked away and frisked of your credit card.... }

As much as I tried yesterday that dark blue border was not on my screen. Drove myself nuts trying to find it. Finally this morning it appears. Don't understand why it was not on my screen until this morning.....and no I haven't been drinking   .

Thanks for you help. Now I'll go get my credit card out and check out the new site.

Best Regards,
Ina

The missing credits mix-up - Don't touch "previous"

Post by LesleyB » Thu Jun 02, 2005 6:59 pm

Yesterday on the New SP site I mysteriously "lost" 5 credits....

Reply I received today from SP:
"You had 18 credits , did two searches & viewed two images which is 12
credits which should have left you with 6 credits. Only 1 is in your
account.

However if you look at the image section of your account, you will see one
is marked " backward 1" This means that whilst in the image, you clicked
previous which costs 5 credits( to go back to the search page, the back
button should be used - as forward should be used and not next)

I have added the 5 credits used in error back to your account."

Great that they gave me back the credits, but I'm not at all sure what the "previous" button is supposed to do? View the previous image in the search results?? I admit I clicked it out of curiosity, but nothing seemed to happen. :?

Anyway, clearly the moral of this tale is DON'T CLICK "PREVIOUS", no matter how tempting, unless you feel like losing 5 credits!

Re: "Previous" button

Hello Lesley,

I mentioned the issue of the buttons in my testing for SP, and said that I thought that they would receive a lot of complaints about the feature. My suggestion was to label the button "Previous page - 5 credits", but did they take up my suggestion?!

In User Details, there is a check box for "Veteran User" that, if ticked, will turn off warnings about credits being deducted.

The Previous and Next page of the book is a valuable feature in some circumstances, but the warnings need to be better. I tried.

John

We know you tried. And we truly appreciate your efforts. Perhaps hindsight may achieve what foresight did not.

Lets do the Timeline again

Post by mesklin » Thu Jun 02, 2005 10:27 pm

Here's a (hopefully) harmless cock-up on the SP timeline screen.
When you first look at it, the descriptions come in boxes with a too-large font size. Go to next page, and the font and layout change.

Far too much cleverness and not enough proving when creating!

Less meaningless features and less flakiness is always the better option.

Hi John
I checked out what it said about "previous" in the FAQ section on SP. It says :

"What happens if the census record I require extends over two pages?
When you view an census image (other than 1881), you can look at the previous or next page by clicking on the "Previous" or "Next" buttons at the bottom of the window. Each time you do so will cost 5 credits. It does not cost anything to look at previously viewed pages."

I can see this would be a help sometimes with census records, but otherwise it seems superfluous. And because at the time I was a "veteran" user, it didn't warn me that it would cost credits... I've changed this now till I get used to the new set-up!

Alphabetical sorting of all names wasn't working yesterday, but it is now. What a relief!

TS New look

Post by CatrionaL » Sun Jun 05, 2005 5:51 pm

Dave

Just a wee remark about the TS new look. I went to the members list the other day and found many of the names difficult to read: white on pale blue.

Maybe I need some new specs!

I know about white on pale blue. Trying to find where definition of text colour hides in program (300+ files) is proving to be a real challenge. What colour would you prefer when I eventually find it?

Dave
I'm partial to blue, as long as it's dark enough to read the white lettering! Would it be easier to make the white lettering black?

Bon courage for the 300+ files.
