Using SP to find my Great Grandfather's birth but am getting nowhere. His name was Robert Hannah ALLAN. His father was Robert Allan and mother was Jane Buchanan Allan nee Hannah. His father's family was from Ayr and his mother's from Glasgow. I have found his death cert - died 17/06/47 aged 42 years. So I know his name, the names of his parents and his approx year of birth (1904 to 1906) and it is likely that he was born in Glasgow but possibly Ayr. Can't find that ellusive birth cert though. Have wasted loads of credits so far but wondered if anyone had any search tips that could help me.
Got my fingers crossed!
Jayne

If you are sure of his year of birth then maybe his name wasn't Allan.
Robert Allan and Jane Hannah did not marry till 1918.

Thanks guys. I didn't think of searching under the mother's maiden name simply because both parents are mentioned on the death cert. I assumed that the only way the father would be named on the DC would be if he was also named on the BC.
I am relatively confident that the Robert Allan Hannah born in Maybole in 1905 is the right guy. However, the dob doesn't match what my Gran (his daughter) gave me but, unfortunately, her memory for names and dates isn't great. Can either of you think of a way I might be able to confirm this is the right hit? Were illegitimate children whose father wasn't named on the BC officially recognised in some way when and if the parents eventually married?
Also, regarding your suggestion about a visit to Park Circus, am I right in thinking that you can view records right up until 2003? I have siblings for Robert that I suspect were born after 1906 and would dearly love to verify the info that Gran has given me.
Thanks again for your help so far!!

Hi Jayne
Best wishes

In Scotland, yes. If the parents marry, the children of that couple who were born before the marriage are no longer considered illegitimate. Were illegitimate children whose father wasn't named on the BC officially recognised in some way when and if the parents eventually married?
At NRH you can view records up to 2006 - I suspect that as they both use the DIGROS system, the same will be available at Park Circus. Also, regarding your suggestion about a visit to Park Circus, am I right in thinking that you can view records right up until 2003?
