FAULDS, VOLZ...& MUNCH.....

Post by Ian Faulds » Fri Jun 24, 2005 3:00 am

I’m Ian Faulds. My father is Edward John Faulds. My grandfather is Edward George Faulds.

I’m trying to trace the FAULDS family history. There was a name change from VOLZ to FAULDS I think sometime between 1933 and 1947 in Scotland.

Other family names I’ve uncovered in the family history include, HARTON, ULBRICH, SCHNEIDER & MUNCH. Are any of these names familiar?

My grand father was actually born Georg Edmund VOLZ in Alloa Scotland on 8/11/1898.

My grandfather had an older brother and sister – Anna Marie Flor VOLZ born 11/1/1885 in Alloa and Julius Robert VOLZ born 6/2/1897 also in Alloa.

(I've only just - five minutes ago- discovered the possible existence of Willi, Flora, Gertrude & Ferdinand via the 1891 census. All siblings of my grandfather)

Anna married James HARTON on 29/8/1904. I think they had a son named Francis in the early 1900’s. Anna died 6/9/1914 in Glasgow.

My grandfathers father was Jacob VOLZ. He was a bottle blower in Glasgow. He was born circa 1859 in Germany (I think) and died in Scotland on 24/1/1947. The address provided in the register for the place of death was 75 Whitehill Crescent Lanark. He is entered in the death register as Jacob FAULDS; formerly VOLZ.

Jacob married Anna Magdelena Marie ULBRICH. According to the register entries I have, she went by the name Marie or Mary. She was born circa 1862 in Germany (I think) and died in Scotland 10/10/1933.

Jacob and Marie were married in Stade Germany 3/10/1882.

Jacobs parents were Jacob VOLZ and Eva SCHNEIDER. Jacob VOLZ snr is recorded as being a ‘game keeper’.

Marie’s parents were Gottfried ULBRICH and Wilhelmina MUNCH. Gottfried is recorded as being a Railway signalman.

My dad seems to recall his father’s brother – Jacob may have emigrated from Scotland to the United States but I can’t seem to find any record of this.

If any of these names strike a chord, I’d appreciate any assistance. Also the address – 75 Whitehill Cres Lanark. Does it still exist?

Primarily I'd like to find out if anyone knows:
- where to search for registers of name changes
- where to search for registers for emigration from Scotland to Australia and immigration from Germany to Scotland. Everything I’ve tried seems to default to the U.S.
- any registers of burial sites

And most of all. Am I related to you?
Thanks.

Hullo Ian

Don't think we've ignored your post. Far from it. Since we read it, several of us have been racking our brains and trying to get our memories to function full steam.

We can remember a post on the old Scotlands People Discussion Group, involving a very similar name change to your Votz/Fauldes which involved a family of glass blowers from, I think, Germany. Unfortuanately, we no longer have acces to that info.

However if someone's memory does move into top gear and come up with more info.,, we'll certainly let you know.

All the best for your research.

Hi Catriona,

Thanks for your reply.

The old posting you refer to was in fact me. Since that posting, I've discovered the name was changed to Faulds from Volz, not Volks as I'd originally thought.

This led me to the most recent posting; armed with new information.

Thanks again.

Hi Ian

The thing I was sure about, apart from the glass-blowing, was that one of the names ended in lks, but my memory dredged up Faulks rather than Volks. At least there is a phoenetic ressemblance.

Sorry I can't help you further.
