Previous Searches

Post by boneo » Mon Feb 13, 2006 10:48 pm

I have currently 127 pages/3166 records of searches and 81 pages/2020 records of images. I find it very difficult to access them with any speed. I do know that you can re-sort the order etc, but I still find this very unsatisfactory and therefore complete the same searches again. I know the User Group meeing was held recently, so don't expect this to be picked up very quickly, but is there any way that the searches and images could be subdivided by BMD and then perhaps by surname to allow one to check quickly if a search has been done before. It is not so bad with images as at least if you have done the search before, the image will show "paid". Another idea would be to have a search box so you can enter the name you are checking and it would bring up all the searches/images with that name.

I feel that I spend a great deal of money, time and effort and like to prove all my work, but I am frittering away it all away as the management of the searches and images needs looking at.

Whilst I have only just joined this group I have "lurked" for a while now. Used ScotlandsPeople since its inception and Scots Origins before that.

Hi Boneo
I'm having the same problem too. I think a search box for a name would be a great idea.
Hope your ideas are considered!

I was thinking about this issue when recently trying to look for images on my own previous searches. I think a search box would be great, where you could type in the name (with the ability for the search to use wildcards).

I do save every certificate which IS mine to my own computer, but I have discovered that sometimes one is found that also mine, but at the time I found it, I didn't know...does that make sense? So it would be nice to go back and check them from time to time without having to scroll through pages and pages of records.

As an aside...why aren't the 1881 censuses able to be saved to computer?

Yes!!!

I agree, I've often thought a search box for one's own searches would be just great!

Best wishes

Hi Boneo, and welcome - who hasn´t lurked???

There I was thinking that I really had to get to grips with this problem, and it seems I was not the only one. My brain is however rather logically challenged, so i will leave it to others to suggest remedies........ :?

Good hunting,

Thrall

Hi Boneo and welcome to talkingscot. I'm sure you will find a bunch of friendly people here willing to help.

I also had the same problem with finding previous searches on SP. My remedy (which took weeks to complete) was to take all of my images from SP and save them to my own computer. I now have separate folders for census, birth, marriage and death records. They are filed alphabetically with the year at the end of the name. This makes it easy for me to find what I am looking for.

Now every time I search, I automatically save it to my computer.

Of course, I agree that it would be great if SP could make it easier for us to search...........but I'm not holding my breath.

Once again, welcome and happy searching.

Awww thanks nelmit!

Yes the screnshot works well...even if a little fiddly. At least I have a way to save the 1881's now, but it would be nice if they could be saved the usual way.

I find using the timeline feature helps considerably-off course you then have to remember when a particular event happened but at least you can see at a "page glance" what you are looking for(I have twenty pages & rising at the moment)
Researching:SCOTT,Taylor,Young,VEITCH LINLEY,MIDLOTHIAN
WADDELL,ROSS,TORRANCE,GOVAN/DALMUIR/Clackmanannshire
CARR/LEITCH-Scotland,Ireland(County Donegal)

ALSO BROWN,MCKIMMIE,MCDOWALL,FRASER.

Subject noted for discussion at the next User Group meeting, - unfortunately that's not until May.

It must be a subject that is on increasing interest to regular SP users.

David

PS Spoke to a contact at SP and it 's something already being looked at by their developers
