Scotlandspeople Discussion Group

The DG is down because of it being hacked? Makes ya wonder if folks accounts are safe on there :o If our registered accounts are 'safe' then it would seem that making access to the DG only from within our regged accounts would resolve the issue.

The SP discussion group was vulnerable because it was phpBB V 2.0.3 or thereabouts. This programme has been upgraded to make it more robust, and it is a far newer version we are using.

The rest of Scotlands People is run on entirely different software, and does not have the same vulnerabilities. To my knowledge, the main SP software has not been 'hacked'.

Registration is used on a BB to ensure that posters have a viable email address. If you have not registered with this BB, then you would not be able to publish your post.

TalkingScot takes site security very seriously, and the welfare of our members is our top priority.

Mesklin. Are you saying that the Discussion Group on scotlandspeople is now Talkingscot, or is it that Talkingscot is a more secure site than what the Discussion Group was built on? I wasn't meaning anything offensive in my post, sorry if you took it that way.

Should there be a link on Scotlandspeople to Talkingscot?

Hi Dennis

I'm going to jump in on this one. There used to be a Discussion Group on Scotland's People that was totally under their adminstration. For various reasons one of which was indeed a hacking attempt they chose to close that portion of their site. The momentum to create the TalkingScot site that you see today and have a membership on came from several former members of the SP Discussion Group. We formed an Admin Group, created a site, mapped out a set of rules and guidelines, and TS was born. We, however, are not in any way under the adminstration of Scotland's People or GROS. There will be a link from the promised soon to appear "washes whiter" (to quote another TS poster) Scotland's People website to TalkingScot. All good things take time....some take longer than others.... Thank you for your interest and also for joining our group and being an active participant!

Jean. Thank for the clarification. I so appreciate the work that goes into the maintenance of this website; it is a true home for many of us and I thank you all :)

Rest assured. No offence was felt by me on your post. As Justjean pointed out, we were all originally on the SP Discussion Group, which was terminated after a hack. This site uses the same phpBB software, but is of a much later and more secure version.

I must emphasize. While TalkingScot and ScotlandsPeople have many interests in common,
They are entirely independant organisations

As such, if our members feel that SP has performed well, we will sing their praises. If our members feel that SP has fallen below the standards we would expect, then robust, but fair, criticism can be expected!

We will do the same for all organisations we encounter.
