Re grave and details but no death cert on SP

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Fri Mar 16, 2007 10:46 pm

My cousin has just sent me burial details on a Robert Semple interned in Annan in 1899, but after a fruitless search of SP for his death, I now dont know where else to look, I have tried the census but nothing well not one who was 64 when he passed. Was every death recorded? Why do I feel I have yet another brick wall. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

PS the lair was purchaced in 1884

Hi Audrey,

Was it actual burial details (i.e. lair number, date of interment) or just a transcript of the headstone?

I only ask, because a couple of my MI's are only "memorials" with dates of death on family stones. The actual people died and were buried elsewhere (Example: at sea, no remains found).

Just a thought.

Hi Audrey
I've also had at least one case where the info on the grave was waaaay out...by 10years! I learned at that point that just because it is carved in stone that does not make it true...

Maybe try widening the dates? And as Mary suggests, the area?

Best wishes
Lesley

Could he have died south of the border? [ in England-shire as my Annan uncle calls it ;)]

but been buried in his home town of Annan? The death would be registered in England.

Hi Audrey,
I know you have the Lair No etc in Annan that has Robert's name on the gravestone.
But was he definitely buried under it?
Is it possible to check with the Council Cemeteries Dept. to make sure he actually was?
And if he was, then they should have the exact day of the interment (normally a few days after death).
As Mary mentioned - sometimes MIs have a name in memory,
and the person was buried elsewhere - in the town where they'd died.
Or in the case of one of my ancestors - a different country!
-
My 3xGr-GF Hugh Kerr is on an MI in the High Kirk in Stevenston as died 6 Mar 1858 aged 78.
This age was near enough exact as he was born in Dalry 16 Feb 1779.
A couple of years ago i spent many fruitless months trying to find his Scottish DC....
Cutting a long story short it was eventually discovered that he'd died in......Canada.
He was at his married daur Helen Park's house in Ingersoll, New Oxford, Ont.
I now know he emigrated sometime in the mid 1840s when he was abt 65 yrs old.
-
I've a few other rellies that died out of Scotland, but mentioned on Scottish MIs.
Not saying this is what happened to Robert Semple; odd though that his DC can't be found.
Maybe wrongly indexed online by GROS? A check of the 1899 fiche at NRH might show him.

But as Lesley says - sometimes ages are waaaay out...!
How very true....
Paisley Toon Cooncil has my gran Isabella Bruce Brown in their burial records as 25yrs - she was actually 75yrs!
I showed them her BC, MC & DC, but they said they can't change their books.
They have though put a note beside her age saying it could possibly be 75yrs....
-
Do you have Robert in any of the censuses?
Wife? Children? Ages? His occupation etc?
Jack

Hi Jack,

Yes body buuried at 6 feet, so plenty room for more as my granny used to say, His internment date ect, I have tried looking under a broad Semple search but nothing, I thought it might be a brother to my great great Grandfather as ages similar but so far no luck with the search.

Good job it is cold today as I can see me spending all day on this, the other thing was his address was Murray Street and that was where the rest of the clan lived at differant times.

Oh well the hunt is well and truely on.

Could be pure coincidence, - there's a 64 year old Robert Jamiesn [sic] SEMPLE who died in 1896 in Kirkintilloch .........
