Hello all,
I received an e-mail a few minutes ago to state that the SP site will be taken down at 0700 BST tomorrow (1st June) to transfer accounts over to the new site. It is hoped that the new site will be operational "sometime in the afternoon".
The new site has the addition of wills and testaments up to 1901, and some search enhancements requested by the User Group. The major new search tool is the ability to search on female deaths using 2 surnames. In addition, when searching for a death using year of birth, the user can set a spread of years up to ±10 years, whereas previously it was fixed at ±1 year. The census searches bring up only those districts relevant to that census year.
There is a completely different look to the site that I believe is much cleaner and more attractive, help is much improved, and there is a link to TalkingScot and for people to post issues to the User Group.
Happy searching!
Regards,
John

Smart new suits all round
John
Thank you for this info. The TalkingScot site will be revised to provide a link to ScotlandsPeople as soon as SP is up and running again.
Hope everybody likes the new look - on both sides.

Thanks John, I'll look forward to trying the new site.
Wouldn't it be good if there was also a 2 name search option for male deaths (spouse or mothers maiden surname)... that would have saved me a bucket load of credits for sure.

Re: mother's maiden surname
Hello Jim,
the difference is that all surnames for a female are extracted from the register and are therefore on a computer index, whereas mother's maiden surname (m.m.s) has been extracted in only a few cases. The extraction of all m.m.s would take a big effort by GROS (or its contractor) but the database has been designed to handle that data if it were made available.
The same sort of reasoning applies to census indexing. GROS has decided to use "thin" indexing, so, for example, place of birth has not been extracted for 1871, 1891, 1901, and forthcoming censuses.
Time and cost are the main reasons for not extracting all the information that family historians would like to search on.
Regards,
John

New Scotspeople site
Wish I had read this posting earlier, I went on the site yesterday, and was quite taken aback, did not know it had changed, thought at first I was on a different site altogether!!
It seems very good though, I went nearly crosseyed looking for an image of a previously viewed marriage, but could not find it, may have been my eyesight to blame there were just so many to wade through, will have to try again when I`m feeling more alert.
It is such good value when you compare the cost of obtaining a cert here in England, its a right rip off!! I had not realised just how certs I had printed off from the Scotspeople over the years, had I had to pay English rates would have spent a fortune!! Not so easy when you are a pensioner unfortunately.

Seeking any descendents from Ezekiel McCulloch, Port Glasgow, also Neil Barr (Greenock)

Am i the only one that doesnt like the new S/P ?.
So far im not impressed with the 1871 census as it more often than not doesnt give me the person i want. ie clicking the name you want and then finding that name isnt on it ! They did say they had some problems with wrong images and did reimberse some credits but said they would the last time but never did.
One of the women at S/P is very helpful and has sent me copies of census but the other one is not so helpful !
Also i preferred it when Scottishdocuments were on their own as that logging in on S/P drives me nuts , although i was one of those when they asked said yes it would be a good idea to merge !
