Thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my post. I do think they are Germans but whether they are prisoners or not remains unsolved for the moment. I will try and read the "General danced at Dawn" passage re his trip to Palestine. The link Alan has posted http://www.egyptstudycircle.org.uk/Arti ... 33p241.pdf is very interesting. I will definitely have to try and find my Dad's Army Records to see if it sheds any more light on his whereabouts.

Here’s something from “All the Blue Bonnets: the history of the King's Own Scottish Borderers,” published 1980. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=Vuw ... CDUQ6AEwAA
“At the end of 1945, the 1st Battalion had moved from Germany to Egypt, in preparation for Internal Security duties in Palestine. Entraining for Palestine, the battalion went into camp in the Plain of Sharon, at Hadera. It then returned to Egypt, to the Canal Zone, and was in camp at Fayid on the Great Bitter Lake during the summer of 1946, before moving back to Palestine, into a camp at Jerusalem, where it formed part of the 1st Infantry Division.”
I suppose August would be summer at your end of the world. That’s when they were at Fayid, in the Great Bitter Lake area, where all the POW camps were that were mentioned in the pdf document. There is mention there of POW camps being run and guarded by the inmates, armed with nothing more then pickaxe handles. Thanks for that snippet from the book "All the Blue Bonnets" i think this is where he was sent - whether it was from Germany or straight from Glasgow i don't know, probably his army records would tell me that.
I did read the pdf doc in http://www.egyptstudycircle.org.uk/Arti ... 33p241.pdf - very interesting. I am keeping a file of all the information i find through this good forum and will try and piece it altogether at some point.
