It's well worth requesting the service records from them. The information contained in them is fantastic. My fathers had his enlistment papers, service history, and the results of his assessment for Officer Training School.

I've just reviewed the standard documentation from the Army Personnel Centre at Kentigern House, and nowhere can I see that the fee of £30 (I got the figure wrong) is waived if the applicant is the next of kin, unless the applicant is the widow or widower, but only in that situation. In other words, the £30 does not appear to be waived for other categories of next of kin.
