Good news. If you're the next of kin, and can prove it, you don't need to pay the charge. Also, the maximum waiting time is nine months, but I got mine back after about eight weeks.

It's well worth requesting the service records from them. The information contained in them is fantastic. My fathers had his enlistment papers, service history, and the results of his assessment for Officer Training School.

I've just reviewed the standard documentation from the Army Personnel Centre at Kentigern House, and nowhere can I see that the fee of £30 (I got the figure wrong) is waived if the applicant is the next of kin, unless the applicant is the widow or widower, but only in that situation. In other words, the £30 does not appear to be waived for other categories of next of kin.

I must have been mistaken. Certainly my mum was the widow in our case. Maybe I read it wrong. I had believed it was the nearest relative who could apply for free.

My apologies.

Be aware of Spelling on the CWGC site.Having my Great-Uncles medals from WW! with his record no.date of death etc but could not find him on the site.
Then I tried a different spelling of his surname Waddel instead of Waddell & up he came.
I contacted CWGC & they are going to change it -been waiting about a year.
