Hi Anne,
AnneM wrote:I'm not sure if that precludes it being the right family as I wonder if the maiden name of mother on the subsequent marriage cert could be wrong.
It wouldn't be the first time someone gave the wrong female relative's maiden name on a certificate  So I don't think it can be ruled out completely, but you may well be right and it's not the correct family.
Regards,
Sarah

Hi again

May I offer for your consideration in 1991, William Wilson aged 19 Private, Highland Light Infantry, Hamilton Barracks, born England. (sob).

This matches his address on his MC but what we need is DWW to tell us if someone described in 1896 as Bugler, 71st? Regiment of Foot, Staff could be the same bod. Otherwise we've got right name, right(ish) age and right place but unfortunate birthplace.

It would however account for why you have never been able to find his parents' marriage on SP. Having said that I've not been able to locate it on FreeBMD either but that is not complete.

Will try the England 1881 for a look see.

The only near match I could find in England in 1881 was a William aged 10 in Warrington son of James, Iron Worker and Ann. There is certainly no guarantee that this is him but not excluded either.

There is also a William aged 9 in Royton in Lancashire who is the son of James and Agnes but father is a coal miner.

Hi

Looks like the 71st of Foot was part of the HLI but by that stage was linked to the 74th.

Anne

However need someone who has more idea that I have what they're talking about. Where is David W when you need him??

BTW Looked for William in 1881 in Scotland and did not find an obvious candidate. There was one however who had an uncle with the wonderful name on Hercules Souttar.

The one in Govan who is a nephew, his aunt does not seem to have had a brother called James, sadly :(

Hi Anne,
Nice work! Seems like real progress is being made. Too bad he had to end up coming from England

Can a man no hiv a Saturday night aff :!: [5 cups]

The 71st were the HLI.............. http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/071-1.htm , but watch out, they were initially the 73rd of Foot.

See also http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/071-2.htm .

The 74th do have a link with the HLI, - in the 1881 reforms they became the second Bn of the HLI, - see http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-inf/074-1.htm

Hello Anne and Sarah,

I can't thank you enough for the help you are giving to me and for the amount of time you are spending trying to pin down my William WILSON. It's wonderful.

Anne, I think that your find of William WILSON at Hamilton Barracks in the 1891? census is a sure contender. But born in England!! That puts a new light on my research. As you say, probably why I haven't been able to find a marriage for his parents.

Do either of you think that his mother Agnes could have been Ann and also perhaps that she had been married before and CROSBIE wasn't her maiden name at all. I'm creating problems now!

Sarah, the family in Kilmarnock looks good but if William was indeed born England then that rules it out.

This is the information I have about William on documents:

1896 - marriage Cert. - bugler, 71st Reg of Foot (Staff)
1898 - first daughter's birth cert. - bugler, Highland Light Infantry
1900 - 2nd daughter's birth cert. - Private, Scottish Rifles (she was born three weeks before he died)
1900 - letter to his wife informing of death - 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles
1907 - letter to his wife awarding Queen's SA medal and clasp Relief of Ladysmith- 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles
1947 - wife's death certificate - regular soldier

Thank you David for the websites which I will look into. A night for intense research, I think. But can you tell me why I can't find William WILSONs death in the Minor Records War Returns?

Thank you all so much, I didn't think I would get so much help on a site - amazing. Off to do some investigating!!
