I have requested a copy of Christopher's birth certificate from GRO.
I am hoping this might give some clue about his father Thomas.

Still trying to work out how the Jamaica link fits in.

That's good, you seem to be having some progression, hope it works out well and you come back and let us know the result.

some success - found birth certificate for christopher

Post by lpearce » Thu May 17, 2007 5:18 pm

I now received the birth certificate from GRO for Christopher Walker.
It is fairly simple, with not vary much detail, it says it is an entry in the Army Register Book of Births, Baptisms and Marriages
It confirms the 1861 Rangoon birth that we know from later census records.
It gives the baptism date as 8 May 1861 performed by H W Crofton, Chaplain.
Also that his father was a corporal in the 68th Foot.
This fits with later census data saying he was a Sergeant Major 68th Foot.
He must have gained promotion between 1861 and 1871.

A thing that is confusing me is that on the certificate in the box that contains the details of Christopher's birth it is headed - 3 West India Regiment of Foot.

I was not aware that the 68th foot was connected to the 3 West India Regiment of Foot.
Does anybody have experience of these GRO Army Birth Certificates that could explain?
Researching Todd - Edinburgh, Blair - Stenton, Haddingtion, Hutchinson - Perth, Fergusson - Moulin/Blair Atholl, Sutherland, Gunn - Kildonan & Latheron
