You were asking about whether the names of James mother could have been swapped with his wifes on his DC. His son William was infomant on his DC but he got his wifes name correct, she was Margaret McLuckie, it was on her DC that their son John, gave his parents as her parents

The other day when I was having a look at some OPR's and censuses it was in 1851 I got one match but couldnt purchase any credits to have a look, so I assume that was the one you had a peek at. It is just possible that the one you found is him in disguise.

I dont want to throw another spanner in the works, but I just had a look again at James and Margarets Banns, and his name is written as Burton, perhaps his accent, whatever it was, made Barton sound like Burton
But that is just a long shot, on the basis that his name is actually Barton. If it isnt then myself and a few others got given that as a middle name in mistake

There is a Bethea Barton, James and Margarets grand daughter, parents James Barton and Isabella Williamson, Bethea is Isabellas mothers name.

I have to admit this is a long standing I have a fourth cousin who is stuck at the same as I am. Sometimes you have to step back just to give the heid a rest from this one, but it is an ongoing puzzler that keeps drawing me back like an addiction. Just wish I could find something about the elusive John Barton and Martha Dunlop.

Okay, to bring this thread back to its original question... I just got the pension papers today. Well, it is really only one (big) sheet. It is a partially printed form, with spaces filled in by hand. Not much info, I'm afraid, but it does give his place of residence and his reason for discharge.Here is the text: Printed text is in bold, handwritten in italics.

On the cover:

25 June 1791

Robt Giles Discharged from Hull Garrison

N.B. Giles afterward must be sent to London the 25th of this Month in Order that his pention maybe sent to Newberry

Main sheet:

By Lieut Duncan Robertson Commanding one of His Majestys Independent Companys of Invalids Whereof John Fraser Esq is Captain

These do certify that the Bearer Robert Giles Soldier having been ordered by the Commissioners of Chelsea Hospital to the Independent Company of Invalids, commanded by Captain Fraser the 24th Day of November 1768 after being discharged for 21 Years Service in the 32nd Regiment of foot then commanded by Lieut Gen Leighton Hath served honestly and faithfully in the above Company for the Space of 22 years & half; But being now worn out, and rendered unfit for any other Duty on Account of being Insane

He is hereby discharged the said Company, and recommended as a proper Object to partake of his Majesty's Royal Bounty of Chelsea Hospital: Having received all just Demands of Cloathing and Pay from his Entry to the said Company to the 24th Day of June inclusive, as appears by the subjoined Receipt.
And his Residence is in Newberry in Berkshire
