Hi,
I'm just beginning to look at some of the military people in my past. Would anyone know what or why the army would have been in Haddington circa 1814? I have a great born there abt 1814 with his fathers occupation given as army paymaster but can't find anything about any army stationed near there.
Thanks for any help

Hello Jacquie,
You’ll possibly get a more specific answer but in the meantime this Google book published 1830 will give you a fair bit of information about military activity in the Dunbar area. There are references to the Napoleonic War period, when the United Kingdom was under threat of invasion, and from about page 174 to troop concentrations, barracks etc at Haddington.
These forces were apparently wound down in the later part of the war when the threat was reduced but there probably would still have been something substantial remaining in 1814.

Hope this helps,
