William Robertson, feuar??

I am looking for info on William Robertson, according to Cupar deed 23/3/1786, he was feuar from Streetford and applying for a 23year lease on a tack of land in pittencrieff.[Cupar??] William would have been born at Moulin perthshire.
As a feuar,am I right in presuming he had been in the military? His brother Robert faought at Culloden with the Jacobites.
Would there be any records for feuars?
I would be grateful for any help. Pamela

Feuar: this would be someone who held lands in return for payment of feu-duty, a stipulated annual amount in cash or kind. [Scotland's People occupations].
Not sure if there would be any record of this. Someone else may know.

Pittencrieff is down Dunfermline way.

Any deed tended to be recorded in the nearest court able to deal with these matters: for Fife that tended to be Cupar or earlier, Dunkeld. Not sure about Streetford - that does not ring any bells with me, but it appears to have been at Kilmany (north of Cupar, still there!)

There may be records for Pittencrieff... I think it may have been an estate. A bit more research could be needed, but if records of tacks exsist they may be held at NAS or at Fife Archives.

You may find these Google Books interesting.

In this 1828 book see page 96 “The New Bridge” and reference to developments at Pittencrieff and opportunities for building feus.

This 1815 book provides similar information and in the process mentions feuing, feued, feu, and feus which hopefully fits in nicely with feuar.

This 1841 book briefly refers to “the new and extensive suburb of Pittencrief which is connected with Dunfermline by a bridge of one arch over the river Lyne” (top of left column)
