War Memorial at Neilston, Renfrewshire?

Post by LesleyB » Sat Apr 12, 2008 2:41 pm

Hi all
I'm hoping that someone is familiar with this War Memorial.

I've heard that it is inside a church in Neilston, Renfrewshire. As far as I'm aware, there are two churches in Neilston, one Catholic and one Protestant. I'm aware there is a Memorial Window in the Parish Church, ( http://www.neilstonparishchurch.org.uk/ ... age314.htm ) but the soldier I'm hoping to find was Catholic, so I'm not sure if he would be listed as he would not have been a member of that congregation.

The soldier I'm hoping to find, Harry McAuley (date of death: 23/04/1917), is listed at both the CWGC & SNWM sites, but does not seem to be listed on the Barrhead War Memorial (a nearby town) which can be seen here:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=118

Can anyone help find the War Memorial on which he is listed?
(I've also posted this request on the Great War Forum)

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

After some googling - I found this:

http://www.paisleydiocese.org.uk/st%20thomas.htm

Might be worth a wee phone call to see if they have a memorial?

You're talking to 'one who knows' Lesley!

(One that would forget her heid if it wisnae attached tae her shooders)

Anyway, if you ever get a chance to get there, and even better, photograph any War Memorials, please, please stick a copy of your photos onto the War Memorial Forum. Neither of the Neilston Churches have been covered.

Hi Lesley,

I live in Neilston and I think that the war memorial in the parish church is for the Boar War and is situated just inside the church grounds. If it is the second world war you are interested in there isn't one in the village as there has been talk recently about getting one placed if you send me your email address I can attach a copy of a document recently sent to me about what is actually in the village. It shows pictures of St Thomas's and the celtic cross and the window inside Neilston Parish Church

Hi Joyce
Thanks for the kind offer.
What I've established so far is that there are 2 memorial stained glass windows for WW1 soldiers inside the Parish Church. There is also, as you have said, a memorial to the Boer War (a celtic cross shaped memorial) in the Parish Church grounds (I believe it commemorates 3 men). What I've still not found out is if there is a WW1 memorial in St Thomas's.

The soldier I am hoping to find mention of died in WW1. So far there has been no progress with this query on the Great War Forum or the Scottish National War Memorial forum. I'll send you my email address and I look forward to reading the document.

Best wishes

Hi Joyce
Just to let you know that I managed to visit St Thomas's at Neilston today and view the WW1 memorial window.

Thanks for your help with this.

Best wishes
